The Coast Guard gift history in West Chicago, Illinois dates back to 1916. The Coast Guard Station was established at the old Wheeling Arsenal, and the first gifts were given from civilian donors. The station’s first keeper, Captain John Hickey, presented two shotguns and a rifle to Captain George Prentice. In 1922, the Coast Guard donated four lifejackets and a hat to the local fire department. In 1932, the station received its own duty boat-the HMCS Ottawa-and also received an assortment ofMiscellaneous Gifts from Citizen Donors program. This program collected items such as cookbooks, children’s toys, radios and other electronics equipment for use by the Coast Guard Station. The station saw some changes during World War II when it became necessary to deploy vessels in both Atlantic and Pacific oceans due to increased international tensions. On October 16th of 1944,Captain Harry Bendix gave a new set of lifejackets (serial number 4) to crewmembers of HMCS Windsor which had been requisitioned for service in Japan during World War II. During peacetime, these lifejackets would not have been allowed on board a warship but during wartime they were essential for maritime safety because of their Cold War design which featured insulation against radiation warfare hazards. After the war ended there was much discussion about what should be done with all of the surplus naval hardware that had been acquired by Canada and America. Some people advocated using this hardware to build roads or bridges while others suggested that it should be used in education or scientific research projects-. Ultimately, it was decided that most of this surplus navy hardware should be mothballed until better times could be found so that it could be put into use again someday! It wasn’t until 1957 when another set of Lifejackets (serial number 5) was gifted to the station by Commodore Frank Jervis who served as Commandant at Fort Worth Naval Shipyard where many veteran sailors had retired after serving in World War II aboard USS Texas (BB 42). These lifejackets would become known as “JackETS” because they were designed specifically for coastal guard activity including being able to handle waves up to six feet tall! Commodore Jervis also contributed two sets of helmets (series numbers 9 & 10) which are still retained today by the Coast Guard Station according to their attached serial number labels preservation act guidelines . Commodore Jervis is credited with creating one of our oldest continuous donation programs giving Christmas gifts along with his personal contributions over sixty years ago!
