The Army National Guard in West Chicago, Illinois has been a vital part of the community since World War II. The unit was first organized on December 12, 1942 when brothers John and Raymond Glidden enlisted in the military to support their father who was serving in the Navy. The Gliddens were the only family to enlist and they became known as "The Giddens". The unit initially served in Texas during World War II before being mobilized for service in Europe. After the war, the Glidens moved to West Chicago where they began farming and raising livestock. In 1951, John Glidden passed away and his wife Mary took over running the farm. During her tenure, she started a school for children with special needs and also donated land to be used as a park. In 1957, after many years of vigilance by Mrs. Glidden, West Chicago's first fire department was established. Now known as Station 21-A, this organization responded to fires all around town for nearly fifty years until it was disbanded in 1995 due to budget cuts. However, tradition is still alive and well with Station 21-A hosting monthly pancake breakfast services for local troops stationed at Fort Sheridan during their downtime! West Chicago is a small town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 5,690 at the 2010 census. It is located on the city's south side and east side. West Chicago is bordered by the city of Chicago to the north, Will County to the east, Oak Forest to the southeast and South Holland Township to the south. The name "WestChicago" was first given in 1892 when John Fenton purchased land from James Hutton in what is now West Chicago Heights. In 1902, Wm. Prentice formed a partnership with George Gorman and others to plat and build a town on this land. In 1907, Harry Emerson Fenton donated land for a high school which became known as West Chicago High School in 1909. The community had an estimated population of 1,500 when it first opened its doors but only had 103 students attend its first graduation exercises in 1911 due to lack of space at nearby Normal University (now Northwestern University). It wasn't until 1915 that WCHS began offering college-level courses such as engineering and business administration which helped attract more students from around Cook County. By 1922, WCHS had reached 2,000 students attending their classes although there were still no classrooms or athletic fields available on campus due to financial limitations caused by World War I damage done throughout much of downtownChicago including WCHS' facilities In 1925-1926 North Side Elementary School was built adjacent to present day Park Meadows Shopping Center across diametrically opposite street from current site of Tower Records & Store - also demolished in 1986-1988) just west of current site line between Northwest Expressway/I-94 (closed off today as part of reconstruction project) and Kedzie Avenue/Wabash Avenue - today's Elmhurst Cemetery - original site line between these two streets

West Chicago was a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers to the community were French Canadians who arrived in 1810 and named it after their own village, Chicoutimi on the Saint Lawrence River in Canada. The name "West Chicago" was given to it by General James K. Polk while he was president of the United States. In 1831, several thousand residents of an adjoining township moved into WestChicago due to lack of land elsewhere in Cook County for farmers to settle. In 1839, a group of Americans built a log cabin on what is now Wabash Avenue and Orchard Street near present-day Griggs Park—the first permanent settler home in WestChicago Township (now Kimball Township). Most settlers here came from New England or southern Ontario; one notable exception was John Prentice who settled here in 1851 as part of a large wave of American pioneers that followed Illinois Central Railroad founder Samuel Morse's investment into railroad development across the Great Lakes region. In 1865, when Lake Michigan entered into open water following a major flood, West Chicago became one of many communities along its shores that lost their homes and businesses when the lake filled up completely. Despite this loss, WestChicago retained some characteristics typical of pioneer settlements such as an open-air market place with multiple stalls located just east of Union Avenue onshore; also typical were two churches: First Methodist and Second Presbyterian which served as meeting houses until 1903 when they were replaced by more modern structures; and post office where mail flowed continuously until 1955 when ZIP code 77323 absorbed all but one service station operated by US Mail before closing down permanently late that year.
