Air force deployed gift history in West Chicago, Illinois began with the presentation of a book to the city on November 11, 1969. The book was donated by the United States Air Force and named "The History of Flying Aeroplanes". The first gift was an A-10 Warthog aircraft. On October 15, 1971, gifts included two F-4 Phantom II fighter jets and a KC-135 Stratotanker tanker. On January 6, 1973, gifts were given to the city by Admiral Chester Nimitz who said that it was an act of appreciation for West Chicago’s contribution in Vietnam. In 1975, when the United States military withdrew from South Vietnam, Mayor John Daley presented General James Mattis with a gift for his service in that war. On July 13th 1991 City fathers voted to give $1 million to the city for aviation improvements which would include new runway and hangar facilities as well as new training airports at Northwest Indiana University and Rockford Airport. This donation is significant because it marked the beginning of what would be known as “the Aviation Years” in West Chicago. Since then many more gifts have been awarded toWest Chicago through donations both large and small including helicopters such as Chinooks and Bell helicopters; airplanes such as ; Boeing 737s; Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol planes; Kaman Kingfisher amphibious boats; Marine One transports used by President George W Bush during his visit to West Chicago on December 12th 2002; three Cessna Citation Jetliners donated by manufacturer Cessna Aircraft Company (later Navistar Aerospace); four Humvees donated by company Humvee Holdings Inc.; four Falcon 900 jet trainers donated by company Aerojet Rocketdyne (now Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne). On September 10th 2018, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that he will award a $100 million grant towards airport upgrades including new runways and hangars which will be dedicated to growing transportation needs in downtown WestChicago. This decision follows years of planning spearheaded by mayor Emanuel who has called for increasing densities along northwest Indiana University’s Loop campus making way for more housing development near O’Hare International Airport. The grant also comes after years of discussions between Mayor Emanuel's office and community groups about how best to improve access eastwest connectivity within downtown WestChicago while also accommodating growth around Hennepin County Central Library scheduled for opening next year adjacent to Interstate 94

The Chicago Air National Guard deployments of gift history have always been special. In 1983, the Guard’s 123rd Bomb Wing deployed a Boeing 727-223 nicknamed “Spirit of Friendship.” The plane was donated by United Airlines and flew to West Chicago for the weekend to offer rides to children in need. In 1873, the city of West Chicago was founded by men from Illinois. The town was named after a ranch in east-central Texas that had been purchased by John P. Walsh and his brother James. The brothers began to settle the area and built a series of homes which they called “The Rancho.” In 1875, the town had a population of seventy-two and was named after John P. Walsh Sr., who had served as mayor of Chicago for two years during the previous year. Over time, West Chicago became known for its agricultural production and its wide variety of goods exported to various parts of the United States. The town also became home to several businesses which prospered thanks to their ties with local farmers: Bendix Bros., Seagrams Brewery, the Eastland Lumber Company, and White Flour Mills were all located in or near West Chicago during its early years. In 1938, West Chicago was annexed into the City of Chicago by Mayor Richard J. Daley due to political reasons related to concerns over its shrinking population and per capita income levels relative to other nearby towns. At that time, however, most residents continued to live in or around downtownChicago until recently when suburban neighborhoods have rapidly replaced them within city limits.
