Waukegan, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 116,826 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Illinois and the second-largest in Chicago. Waukegan is located on the South Side of Chicago and it straddles Lake Michigan to the east. The city's boundaries are largely defined by Cicero Avenue to the north, State Street to the south, and its two largest streets: Western Avenue to the west and Ashland Avenue to the east. The first European settlers in what would later become Waukegan were French Catholic missionaries from Quebec who arrived during Joseph Rochefort's 1812 Expedition through present-day Northwestern Illinois. A group of these men founded a Mission Church near what is now State and Western avenues on May 4, 1814. This mission was soon followed by other Jesuit missions in central and eastern Illinois with similar names: St Anthony's (1816), Sacred Heart (1827), Immaculate Conception (1828), Holy Cross (1829), Notre Dame de Lourdes (1830). In 1836–37 Waukegan was one of twenty-seven towns organized into DuPage County under General James K. Polk as part of his Great Compromise efforts following General John Fetterman's victory at Peoria over Andrew Johnson's forces that year. As part of this effort, DuPage County became one of six counties within American India Company territory that received new government status as Indian Territory after their withdrawal from Ulysses S Grant’s American Civil War Administration on August 15th, 1865 – an event generally known as “Indian Removal” or “Native American removal” because it involved forcibly taking all Native Americans living west of Indiana upriver to Canada where they were eventually sold into slavery or given away as gifts to white settlers across British North America. In November 1867 Waukegan annexed parts of Addison Township which had been detached from neighboring Glen Ellyn; annexation became effective January 1st, 1868 when those parts were combined with Wauconda township forming a single town named after George Washington Carver who served as its first mayor (). On November 3rd 1893 local businessman Julius Rosenwald donated land bordering Rush Street on both sides of Lake Michigan for a new city park; this donation marked Chicagoans' first exposure to nature outside their downtown neighborhoods (). The population growth rates for both sexes during early 20th century periods varied significantly; however women made significant strides in professional fields such as businesswoman Ida Blythe Bonds being elected Mayor/City Clerk 1951–1957 while African Americans also began making significant contributions through workaday jobs such as Nannie Helen Williams working at Peoples Gaslight Factory firehouse (); blacks also played an important role throughout civic life including serving terms on Aldermanic committees () before becoming fullfledged members starting around World War II but only starting drinking alcohol after then until becoming fully legalized beginning in 1965 when prohibition ended nationwide

The city was founded on March 12, 1871 by Congregationalists from Waukesha County and was incorporated on November 3, 1872. Waukegan is one of the most recent additions to Cook County and has rapidly grown in recent decades. In 2000, it had a population of 60,813; by 2010, that number had increased to 71,363. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Waukegan history can be traced back to 1871 when Congregationalists from Waukesha County arrived in what is now Waukegan Township. They were eager for land that could be used for religious services and education purposes and wanted to name their new town after some of their own members who had died in battle or missionary work abroad. After much discussion, they decided on "Waukegan," which means "place where God's voice can be heard." On March 12th of that year the township was organized with a population of only 10 people including six women and four men - all Congregationalists! The first settler in what would become Waukegan was James Fenton who came overland from Wisconsin on December 9th of 1872 while working as an agent for the Rock Island Railroad Company. He found good farmland north of present day downtown Waukegan along with access to water supplies and lumber resources so he began expanding his holdings quickly. By 1880 there were approximately 255 settlers living in the township – this compared favorably to neighboring village Ofallon (population 587) which only had 7 residents at that time! In 1902 another group of Congregationalist settlers moved into what would become Park Ridge following purchase of land east of present day Downers Grove from Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library trustees John Fitzgerald Kennedy Sr./John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr.. The original park-like setting remains today within walking distance (and just minutes' drive)of downtown Chicago as well as other key points withinChicago’s vibrant cultural landscape today! As Chicago grew larger becoming more congested than ever before; many citizens elected not to live near downtown anymore but rather choose instead homes closer to jobs or shopping centers like Park Ridge or Oak Brook…thus creating “the creeping suburbanization” common across America during this time period! However despite these negative trends happening outside Downtown Chicago; inside City limits things continued moving forward smoothly until 1907 when two factors set off a chain reaction which ultimately ledtowidespread panic throughout North America: World War I caused prices for goods sold online/over the phone skyrocketing making many Americans desperate for cash income opportunities; regulations put into place due largelyto advancing technology related issues such as radioactivity became increasingly difficult/impossible To overcome without government intervention…thus resultinginwhat we now know as ushered-in prosperity!! That same year also saw incorporationof neighboring Westchester Village which followed suit soon after….. finally beginningthe long process whereby suburbs began spreading throughout Northwestern Illinois………. thus leading us here today! During World War II most notably IL-2 Sturmovik aircraft were produced at nearby Stroudsburg Arsenal also knownas Wilmette Arsenal due primarilytoits proximity to then newly developed Aircraft Manufacturing District being established there…. thus helping contribute significantly(but not exclusively)toIL-2 production!!!!!!! Finally arriving back home safely after 8 years Airlift operations carrying President Eisenhower during his visitToChicago late 1950s would later mark final appearanceofthe venerable IL-2 planeoutsideOf Chicago proper!!!!!
