The United States Air Force has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to help those in need. From giving back to the community through Operation Smile, to providing humanitarian assistance during times of disaster, the USAF has always been there for its friends and allies. That is why when I learned about the Air Force's deployment history in Waukegan, Illinois, it was such an honor and privilege to be able to contribute my gift history to this story. My family and I are from Waukegan, and we have always been supportive of the USAF. Our family motto is "We stand together." And so it was only natural that when we heard about Operation Smile- which gave back $1 million to local charities- our hearts went out to the air force personnel who were involved. We knew that they needed our support! After reading some of the amazing stories about how air force personnel have helped others in times of need, it was clear thatOperation Smile had touched many lives. The fact that every dollar donated goes directly into helping those in need is something that nobody can take away from us- not even the Bundeswehr! We thank them all for their contributions and look forward to working with them again soon!

Waukegan, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located on the South Side of Chicago. Waukegan was founded in 1892 as a small village on the east side of Chicago by Irish immigrants. The name "Waukegan" comes from an old man's name, meaning "good water." The first school in Waukegan was built in 1892 and it soon become known for its excellence. In 1925, Waukegan became one of 25 townships in Cook County to be annexed into the City of Chicago. Today, Waukegan has a population over 50 thousand people and it continues to grow with new businesses opening up and residents expanding their families. Today's economy depends heavily on heavy industry such as Steelmaking (Auromere), Printing & Publishing (Equal Exchange Press), Chiropractic Care (Chicago Chiropractic Center), Transportation (I-South Tollway) and Real Estate Development (Vault Group). These industries have helped drive growth throughout the cityscape over time and continue to do so today - making Waukegan one of the most active cities within Chicagoland!

Waukegan is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,648 at the 2010 census. Waukegan is the third most populous city in Illinois after Chicago and Springfield. The name "Waukegan" originated from the name of a creek that flows through the town. The first settler in Waukegan was James Weller who arrived in 1836. He set up a cabin on the site of what is now known as Weller Park. In 1837, John Millington settled near what is now Elmhurst Avenue and North Avenue in Waukegan. By 1840, there were five families living in Waukegan: Weller Park, Millington's Cabin, Hammonds' Store, Beardsley's House, and Gibbs'. In 1847-48 Phebe Weller built a log cabin on an east-west street called Elmira Road in present day Winnetka Township which became known as Elmira Street when it was widened to two lanes around 1900. At this time Waukegan had only one store and three homes; by 1850 it contained ten dwellings and two stores). A few years later Daniel Biddle erected his home on State Street between East First Street and Second Avenue which became known as Biddle Place. In 1853 Adam Haines moved to Waukegan from Joliet with his family (two sons) following railroads reaching Joliet fromChicago during that year; he started an inn at 6th & K Streets NW with fourteen rooms where passengers could change cars at Joliet for points north or south on the Great Lakes Railroad system. The inn operated until 1907 when it closed due to high competition from other transportation services within Joliet limits; Haines remains listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its architecture alone (). In1857 Isaac Rice opened a grocery store on North State Street between First and Second Avenues which became known as Rice's Drug Store (). This grocery store continued operations until 1922 when it closed due to fire ();rice still resides adjacent to his former location today (). Weiser & Company also began selling groceries out of their building located at 233 South Michigan Ave NE beginning about 1870 It ceased operations about 1902 but still stands today (now used as offices). Another early grocer was Cramer Bros.; they operated out of a building located at 149 North Washington Blvd between West Adams Boulevard and Pulaski Drive (later renamed Daley Plaza) starting about 1880 . Between 1865-1870 John Ryan built a small frame house at Fourth & Massapequa Streets NW which served as Ryan's Hotel () until 1912 when it burned down (); Ryan still lives nearby today (). In 1861 Orville Smeaton opened Smeaton’s Grocery at 417 N Washington Blvd., just west of current Dayhoff Parkway (), becoming one of America’s first grocers open to large numbers of customers outside Chicago proper [] He also ran Smeaton’s Brewery opposite River Bank Stadium () for several years before moving into his present Two Rivers Brewing facility () near Union Station)]. A number of firms established themselves along Washburn Ave east side including Roper Bros., Hoffman Brothers Coal Minerals Co., Anderson Manufacturing Company (), Carbide Glass Works (), etc.]] In 1868 Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address from Ford Hall (& across river), then part of old City Hall complex]], [This event markedincreased trade along Washburn Ave][and spurred development along alley behind Old City Hall complex]]. Reverend Elijah Howe organized Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church #1 southwesterly corner Third St& Division Ave starting about 1870 ]. blacksmith shop founded by Solomon Price ($)]; general mercantile business started by Andrew Joice ($)]; earliest electric light company established here by Carrie Fenton ($5 per month subscription price); livery stable founded by Drury Dixon ($)]; earliest 5x10 parking lot (.60 acre) ever developed here.][] ] Today there are over 150 businesses operating within walking distance or minutes walkable distance Of Mayor Tom Barrett\'s office!
Waukegan was founded in 1847 by Josiah W. Kauffman and his wife, Emma. It became a city in 1871 and was named for Waukegan Lake. The Kauffman family ran the city's first grocery store, which opened in 1851. In 1865, the city passed an ordinance creating a fire department and establishing limits on building height. The Kaufman family sold their business to the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1886.
