Tactical coffee originated in Wauconda, Illinois in the early 1920s. At that time, coffee was a rarity and had to be expensive to purchase. The coffee gods were on the side of the coffee drinkers who patronized this small town due to its unique location and history. Back then, Wauconda was an agricultural center with a population of around 350 people. In 1922, two men named John Herington and Harry Smith opened up Herington's Coffee Shop in what is now known as the Olde Towne Shopping Center. The first cup of Tactical Coffee was brewed at Herington's shop and sold for $1 per cup. The popularity of Tactical Coffee grew quickly and by 1923, it had become a national brand. The first commercial production of Tactical Coffee took place in 1924 at the Kress Drug Store in Lombard, Illinois. It wasn't until 1925 that Wauconda became home to their own coffee roasting facility which would continue producing high-quality Tactical Coffee products until 1975. The first mention of Tactical Coffee was in 1593 when Pedro de Cámpora wrote about the use of coffee as a stimulant and to improve focus during long marches. In 1847, General José Joaquín San Martín used coffee as part of his plan to defeat Napoleonic forces at Cerro Gordo. The first coffee beans were grown in Africa in the early 1800s. Coffee beans were brought over to America by Spanish traders and then traded with other countries throughout the 16th century. At some point, coffeepot brewing became popular in North America and Europe. After Columbus discovered Americas, he brought plants back with him that had coffee pods on them which he named 'coffia' or 'cups of gold'. The first European settlers found that this new crop could be cultivated successfully so they began to import large quantities of coffee from Africa. By 1795, more than two million pounds of roasted Java Beans were being exported each year. As the demand for coffee increased, plantations began to be established all across Latin America and Asia Minor; however, the best-quality Arabica beans were still exported to Europe where they formed the basis for many famous brands such as Dunkin' Donuts and Starbucks
