The community's history can be traced back to 1871 when John A. Crouse settled on a tract of land near present-day Wauconda and established the first post office there. He named his new township after himself, Wauconda Township. In 1903, the town became part of McLean County when it was organized from portions of Carroll and Kane Counties. The current abbreviation for the city--WAC--is based on this merger
