Washington, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 38,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Washington is located on Lake Michigan, just north of downtown Chicago and east of the University Park neighborhood on Soldier Field. The first permanent settler in what would become Washington was David Potter in 1814. Potter's cabin can still be found near current day Harrison Street and Hennepin Avenue in Northwest Washington. In 1824, Potters son John built a log cabin on what would become West Adams Street just south of State Street which remains standing today as one of the oldest commercial streets in Chicago! The town started to gain popularity for its natural resources such as lumber, hunting, fishing and agriculture; these industries continued until after World War II when heavy industry took over most of those businesses including steel production that left Washington with few jobs! In 1886, George Hearn bought land around present-day Harrison and Pulaski Streets for $10 per acre which became Hearn Heights (now adjacent to Lincoln Park). He began developing this land into an agricultural community named after him with two ponds, a schoolhouse and other farm buildings being built along with a large barn/smithy complex leading up to his home now known as Hearn House (formerly Knowles' Hardware). By 1907 there were 4 churches – First Methodist (1887), Second Methodist (1893), Presbyterian Episcopal (1907) and Congregational 1st Zion Baptist Church (1912). In 1932 Mayor James Mapp placed a moratorium on annexation because he felt that it would increase tax rates by 3%. In 1933 during Mayor Daley's second term construction began on Roosevelt Road connecting Armour Square west to Wacker Drive; this road became Roosevelt Boulevard when Daley was reelected mayor in November 1934! On December 5th 1933 City Council voted 7-1 to annex all unincorporated areas within Cook County west of Halsted Street! This annexation created the city limits we see today including parts of Ravenswood annexed by Oak Lawn from Cicero Township in 1957 while Fort Worth annexed Arlington Heights from Downers Grove in 1984!!! The town of Washington was founded in 1792 by Captain John Ferguson and his family after they discovered a rich gold vein near the current site of Chicago. The town quickly grew into a major cultural and commercial center for the area, becoming known as "The Promised Land." In 1818, Washington became the capital of Illinois and remained so until it was moved to Springfield in mid-1912.
