In 1861, Warrenville was chartered as a city and quickly developed into an important agricultural center with large produce barns and warehouses dotting its landscape. The economic decline of the early 21st century led to some reductions in services and jobs but overall, Warrenville remains a vibrant community with strong ties to agriculture, business, education, government service and family values.

Warrenville is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,661 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Warrenville was Elijah Fenton, who arrived in 1817. He and his family started a farm on the east side of town. In 1831, John Hickey bought land from Fenton and built a sawmill in what is now the heart of Warrenville. By 1830, the town had about 100 residents. In 1836, General Joseph Hooker founded Camp Ford on the north side of Town Lake to take advantage of its natural resources: coal seams and timber along its course made it an important stop for wagon trains coming through central Illinois during the mid-19th century. After he resigned as army commander during the Civil War, Camp Ford became one of Chicago's most important military installations until it closed in 1923 due to budget cutsbacks by then Mayor Richard Daley's administration. The townspeople constructed their first schoolhouse in 1838; that same year they also erected a meeting house and subscription library (later renamed The Gales Library). A post office was established here in 1840; it has been open continuously since then. In 1850, Joel Chandler Harris wrote "The Children of Mars", which set off a literary boom around this time for Illinois towns with large populations like Warrenville—a boom that continued into subsequent decades across much rural America thanks largely to settlement by European Americans fleeing religious persecution at home or seeking opportunity on distant shores. In 1862–1863, Confederate forces burned down many buildings and destroyed all but one block of downtown Carthage while resident men were manning cannons against Union troops; this event is generally considered to have caused significant damage to local economy and architecture as well as triggering retaliatory vandalism by locals over several years thereafter throughout much Central American farmland nearby where similar fires had occurred during prior rebellions among farmers seeking revenge against perceived aggressors rather than just their own governments' inadvertent assistance (the only such incident documented locally within Cook County itself). As late as 1930s even some parts still standing from these earlier disturbances could be seen littering streetsides with building materials used up during skirmishes between Grant’s army retreating back across state lines near Carthage some seventy miles away... This period marks an abrupt end not only to residential development but alsoto commercial enterprise within what would become known as “Oldtown” following battles fought there between Union & Confederate forces several months after Harris’ novel came out."
