Villa Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Villa Park is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and its Park East campus. The Village of Villa Park was platted in 1892 by J.P. Morgan and others as a village on the east side of what is now West Side Highway south of I-95; it ceased to exist when Morgan's properties were combined with those of other developers into the current Village of Villa Park Corporation. Named for Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano who had visited this area in 1602, Villa Park was originally called "Verrazano Township" until 1901 when it became "Village Park". A post office operated at Villa Park from 1892 to 1896; after that the mail was delivered by horse and buggy through Champaign County to Rockford, then via auto to Aurora on Lake Michigan before finally reaching VillaPark postal station on May 6, 1896. The first settlers arrived in 1902 with John Doherty and his family taking up residence on a farm near present day Old National Road/Route 64/Old US 66 which they named Doherty's Grove. In 1904 approximately 60 families moved into two lots located east of present day Elm Street – one lot larger than the other – becoming known as Longacre Landing because that’s where most American imports arriving during World War I were unloaded for shipment back home across Lake Michigan: groceries, munitions and other war supplies bought by Americans at inflated prices from Great Britain’s Manchester Ship Canal monopoly (a situation similar to how Ulysses S Grant ended Reconstruction). The landing site served as an agricultural center with a sawmill running until 1925; later that year a grist mill added; also in 1926 an electric company built lights along Elm Street which remain operational today despite being replaced multiple times over due to faulty wiring throughout the early 20th century including several failures during Prohibition).
