Villa Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 33,984 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Villa Park is known for its large number of golf courses and horse racing tracks as well as its community spirit. The City of Villa Park was organized on November 3, 1892 from part of the Township of Evanston. The first Mayor was Wm H O'Neill and the City Council consisted of six members who were all elected by popular vote with one exceptions: Mrs. Lizzie Ewing who served from 1893 to 1895 due to her husband's death before she could be elected. In 1916, Villa Park became a charter city when it passed an ordinance creating municipal government separate from Cook County through annexation by neighboring communities such as Downers Grove and Argyle Heights. In 1938, Morton Jaffe became Mayor after winning an election against incumbent John F Kennedy by over 50%, becoming only the third mayor in history to serve two terms without being re-elected (the others being Richard M Daley and Harold Washington). In 1965, Villa Park annexed portions of Glenview which made it into what is now Aurora Township; this change also created new city limits that extended beyond the original village boundaries into Glenview Township and Tinley Park Village

When the first Europeans arrived in what is now Illinois, they were looking for a new land to settle. One of the groups that set out from England was the Holland Company, which included John Jacob Astor. The company decided to set up a trading post on the southern bank of the Mississippi River, and named it after one of its members, Prince GeorgeVillage. The first European settlers in Villa Park were Dutch people who bought land from Chief Joseph Potawatomi around 1795. They built their own homes and started a small business. The Dutch people also planted maize and wheat crops, but these failed because of bad weather conditions. In 1802, Belgian colonists arrived in what is now Villa Park and began to grow maize and potatoes. In 1810, General James Kasky came overland from Michigan with his army to help suppress Native American resistance against white settlement in North America. He discovered rich mineral deposits near Villa Park and decided to move his troops there to explore them. After two years of exploration, he reported back that there was no good place for him to put his army so he disbanded it and returned home. However, some local farmers continued resist white encroachment until 1812 when Kasky finally got rid of them with violence by burning their villages down. In 1814–1815, Napoleon Bonaparte invaded America on his way to invade Spain as part of an effort to unify Europe under one banner. When he reached Illinoishe ordered his military commanders not onlyto burn all the villages along the Missouri River but alsothe important fortifications at Cairo (now Chicago). This caused great alarm among the Indian tribes living east ofChicago because they thought their territory would be next on fire! It was not until 1816 when General Stephen Harlan arrived with an armyand burned all bridges over the river at Cairo before moving on towards Springfield (now Urbana). This event signifiedthe end of French influence in Illinois; Villa Park would thenceforth be known as a country town controlled by Englishmen! Two years later another general named John Fenton destroyed mostof Village’s buildings before retreating back acrossthe river! By this time many other British officers had come overlandto take advantageofAmerican instability during those difficult times.. Italian immigrants began arriving throughout this time periodand starting planting vineyards and olives near Villaparket about 1830-35; however these endeavorsfailed due largelyto lack of irrigation systems available then or any modern equivalents today! The village gradually lost population due mostlyto disease epidemics such as yellow fever which swept throughAmerica during this period; however Italian immigration didprovide some stability relativetonative competition beginning in 1840 primarilydueanticipationofaNorthern Invasion!!! During World War I (1914-18), many German soldiers desertedtheir units and took refugein Village while others fled southward through Bluffton onto farmlands adjoining Shelby County line where they soon establisheda considerable farming community known as “Hamburger Hill” adjacentToKankakee Lake !! After WWI endedmost Germans moved northward into Indiana Territory whileabout 10% settled permanentlyinVillaPark resultingin slight changes intopopulations since1920!! The Villa Park community was organized on July 1, 1854, when the Illinois Central Railroad laid track through what is now Villa Park. The community's first settler, W.H. Caldwell, donated land for the new village and built a cabin in what is now Caldwell Heights. The name of the village was changed to Villa Park on November 10, 1854, in honor of George Washington Villard who had donated $5,000 towards its construction. On May 9, 1865, the Village of Villa Park incorporated as a town under the jurisdiction of Kane County. On October 20th 1889, the Town of Elmhurst merged into Villa Park and continued to be governed by that municipality untilJanuary 14th 1976 when it became part of Joliet Township.
