Vernon Hills is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,898 at the 2010 census. Vernon Hills is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the edge of Cook County's eastern suburbs and is bordered by Lake Michigan to the south and east, and by DuPage County to the north. The first settlers in Vernon Hills were William Wegman and his family from Holland Township in New Jersey who arrived in 1837. They founded a small farming community called West Point on what is now Vineyard Avenue near what is now Roosevelt Road (now South Shore Drive). In 1839 they donated land for a public school which became Yorkville High School; it was also one of several high schools established in Cook County during that decade. In 1847, John Pritzker bought some property adjoining West Point from William Wegman; he renamed it Vernon Hills after his home town of Vernon, England. By 1860 the population of Vernon Hills had increased to 350 residents. On July 20, 1870 President Ulysses S Grant made Vernon Hills one of two towns in Illinois ("the other being Lemont") chosen for annexation into Chicago as part of his plan to make Chicago an "ambitious city." The incorporation process took place on October 3, 1870 and on November 1/2 Vernon Hills became a full-fledged municipality with its own government and court system under ordinance No. 9554 filed December 6th by Mayor George Ladd & Clerk Mlle J Fenton (&c.). The growth of downtownChicago led to decreased business opportunities for farmers living around Villa Park & Orland Park so Vernon Hills began annexing other areas including Streamwood (1876), Hinsdale (1878), Glen Ellyn (1880), Arlington Heights (1882) & Aurora Heights (1884). These annexations allowed for more housing development within easy reach of downtown Chicago while still providing much needed farmland for local farmers. This agricultural economy continued until about 1920 when large scale mechanization started making production difficult for many small farmers which caused them to sell their land or move away from rural America altogether. Election results from 1920 marked the beginning of an end for this type of agriculture as well as other businesses within town limits such as grocery stores becoming concentrated along State Street just north of Cicero Avenue while transportation chose suburban routes rather than through town center like before which resulted in increasingly less access to jobs within town limits making shopping options limited if not nonexistent outside those few major retail locations located close by like Sears Roebuck across Cicero Ave or Marshall Field’s Department Store located just east and beyond Eisenhower Parkway outside village limits along Eisenhower Parkway near I-290 exits 55 & 56 - all these places closed down during this time period leaving people only able buy items available inside larger retailers located further out - essentially ending any hope township residents may have had that they would ever see their hometown grow again despite previous efforts over decades! At this point farmer families had successfully migrated away from rural America towards large cities where they could find work but their homes were no longer there to stay – essentially ending an era long associated with township life
Vernon Hills was founded in 1871 by Henry Vernon and his wife, Fanny. The Vernon family ran a grocery store and cotton gin on the corner of Harrison and Waymouth Roads for over seventy years. In 1936, Vernon Hills became a city. The first mayor of Vernon Hills was John Hickey.
