In 1840, Mayor John Knowles built the first grocery store in Urbana and began to sell coffee. In 1865, Isaac Newton was hired as the first barista at the First National Coffee Company. In 1886, Chicago's First National Coffee Company established a coffee plantation in what is now Columbia County, Illinois; this planted beans would help make Chicago's first cup of coffee. The company continued to grow coffee until it merged with Dutch Bros. Coffee in 1912. By 1915, all of the major American companies had their own coffee brands with their own production facilities throughout the United States. The early 20th century saw an increase in interest in quality coffee due to World War I and Prohibition; however, most of these new found enthusiasts stopped buying beans after 1919 because they could no longer afford them. However, some continue to roast beans today and continue to be popular among specialty drinkers around the world who appreciate high-quality coffees from around the globe

In 1952, First National merged with two other companies to form Brown & Williamson Corporation and Urbana became one of its subsidiaries. In 2001, they merged with Keurig Inc. and Urbana became Keurig Coffee's headquarters. Urbana, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Kane County. The population was 763 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Kane County after Chicago and Urbana-Champaign. It is one of two cities in Cook County (the other being Chicago) that are not part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers to what is now Urbana were Quakers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1795. They built a small settlement on the banks of the Sangamon River, which they called "Aurora". In 1818, when Illinois became a state, Aurora was incorporated as the town of Urbana by an act of Congress. The name may be derived from Latin urbis arbora - "city tree" - because many trees were planted near town center for shade during summertime. In 1865, General Samuel Trumbull organized what would become known as Trumbull's Legionnaires to help build a new capital for Illinois – Springfield – and purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) south of downtown UrbANA to provide land for this purpose. On December 12, 1865, General Trumbull formally dedicated Springfield's new capitol building with his speech: "Whereas we have been long laboring under an impression that our present capital could not be Waco or New Orleans without detriment to our intellectual development; Therefore I am pleased to inform you that we have erected within its limits an edifice surpassing any hitherto constructed by us or either sectional government." Other early locations for Illini football games include Champaign Agricultural College's Stagg Field in 1892 and Park Ridge High School's Briggs Stadium in 1899. The Illini also played their first ever intercollegiate game at Westville High School on November 10th against Yorktown College (now Wheaton College). This game resulted in a 14-0 victory for IL over Loyola Marymount University. The 1903 season saw both teams play each other twice - once at home and once away - before finally settling into Memorial Stadium where they've played ever since except for their annual Thanksgiving Day rematch which has taken place at Soldier Field since 1907orname change from Memorial Stadium to Soldier Field due to World War II military activity there
