Urbana, Illinois is a city in the United States. The population was 88,554 at the 2010 census. It is the third largest city in Illinois. Urbana is also the capital of Urbana-Champaign County and home to UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). The first humans to enter what is now Illinois were hunters and gatherers who traveled upriver from Missouri overland during the late Pleistocene epoch. They may have been followed by Paleo-Indian groups who went into what is now central Ohio and southern Indiana based on evidence found in archaeological sites there. In 3200 BC, people from Yucatan City in Mexico built Cahokia, one of the most significant pre-Columbian cities in North America. One reason for this rapid expansion may have been trade with other parts of North America because of proximity to water supplies. In 1810, when Michigan became a territory of Ohio, much of what is now Illinois was included within that state including Champaign County which was then known as part of Kankakee County. By AD 1001, they had founded a small village known as Nappanee on land that would eventually become Urbana Township. In 1833, General James Kenedy's Expedition discovered the Mississippi River and explored present-day Illinois; he named his new settlement after himself, Kenedystown on May 8 of that year. In 1836, President Andrew Johnson made Urbana the temporary seat of government for Cook County while his permanent home was built in Chicago. On July 1, 1850, Nappanee was officially incorporated as a village by Act of Congress under name "Upper Arlington". The town originally became fully independent from Cook County on January 1st, 1871 when its charter was ratified by voters assembled at a special election held to coincide with that date; however its status as an independent village continued until 1957 when it merged with neighboring Arlington Heights into one enlarged city called Urbana which still remains technically an separate municipality within Cook County today despite having over 1 million residents combined!
