Tinley Park is a small village in the northwest of the U.S. state of Illinois, located in Decatur County. The population was 5,717 at the 2010 census. Tinley Park is home to the Tinley Park United Methodist Church and Tinley Park High School, which has remained one of the largest high schools in Illinois since it opened its doors in 1892. The village also contains two shopping malls - One Stop Shop and Macy's - as well as a number of smaller businesses and dwellings. The Village of Tinley Park was organized on February 22, 1868, when five families from other villages consolidated their land holdings into a new township called Tinley Township (later renamed Decatur County). At first, tinkerers and farmers found little use for their product because transportation was difficult to come by; however, with railroad development came new opportunities for commerce and industry. By 1890, tinkerers had replaced farmers as mainstay primary-sector employers in Tinley Park. In 1892, political subdivisions were created within Decatur County: North Decatur Township became portion of Chicago while South Decatur Township became part of Tinley Park. In 1903, parts of northDecatur Township were annexed into nearby Lemont while southDecatur Township rejoinedtin Lake Forest Terrace later that year following annexation by that municipality too - this left an unorganized area east of Lemont known as "East Side" or "South Side". Tinley Park was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Tinley and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after the tin ore found near the town. Tinley Park was laid out in a grid pattern and had six blocks, each block size measuring 36 feet wide and 16 feet deep. Streets were named for families in the community, such as Richardson, Van Buren, Marshall, Mosely and others. In 1881, Tinley Park became part of the city of Chicago. In 1945, Tinley Park was annexed by the City of Englewood.
