Taylorville is a city in Pulaski County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County. The first settler in what is now Taylorville was Levi Brown and his family who arrived in 1817 from Kentucky. Brown had been sent as a trader by General John Pemberton to purchase land in this area from the Shawnee Nation. He named the tract of land that he purchased "Taylorville" after General James Hennepin's uncle, James Taylor. In 1834, Daniel Boone and his band of men explored this area and camped on the east side of present-day Taylorville while they built their cabin at Big Timber Hill. They also erected a log cabin known as Black Forest near where present day Elm Street meets Third Street (now renamed West Main). In 1835, Nathan Hale and his party of thirteen men were exploring this section of Missouri when they encountered an Indian village on what is now Washburn Road just north of modern day I-270 (Hale's road). Hale killed one Indian chief and took many others captive before finally being captured himself by Chief Osage Indians near modern day Mount Vernon Cemetery across I-270 from today's town center. After spending three years as a prisoner among the Osages, Hale managed to escape with several other British prisoners during an expedition led by Captain David Dixon overland through Indian Territory in late 1839 or early 1840. When Dixon returned to Canada he reported that all but three captives had escaped - including Hale - and so began an international manhunt for Hale which eventually ended with his capture on July 12, 1840 at Fort Gibson south ofpresent-day Tulsa Falls, Oklahoma. In 1865 Union General Donelson advanced northwest along present day US Highway 69 into Indian Territory following military orders given during the American Civil War General Ulysses S Grant to find any Confederate forces who may have remained hidden within that portion of America west of Kansas City. Upon reaching Myerstown Township on July 10th River Road intersecting US Highways 71& 73 just east of present-day Taylerville crossed approximately two miles downstream from what is now Onalaska Creek where Union Colonel Nathaniel Lyon located Confederate munitions cache prior to Battle Of Stones River on September 8th 1862 about seven miles southeast from Taylerville according to popular legend President Abraham Lincoln called for cavalry action against Confederate forces under BrigadierGeneral Shelby Foote outside Memphis Tennessee only hours after learning about battle due to its proximity Totown residents fanned out throughout town looking for stray horse herds likely used by Confederates seeking refuge Horses found inside building located behind store closed up until recently storage space available only for Historical Museum features memorabilia associated with Confederacy
