Taylorville is a community located in McLean County, Illinois, about 10 miles (16 km) east of the town of Urbana. The population was 9,640 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The name "Taylorville" originated from a grant made by President James K. Polk to David Taylor in 1871. The grant included land on the south side of the Cumberland River and east of what is now Interstate 75. The town was organized in 1872, and named for James Prentice Taylor, president of Ohio State University at Columbus. In 1916, William Hays donated land to the village which extended west from Illinois Route 12 to Illinois Route 1507 and north to US Highway 31W. In 1924, Congress passed legislation creating McLean County as part of Indiana Territory following the admission of that state into the Union. On October 1, 1926, Taylorville became a municipality within McLean County with its own government and police department. On July 1, 1933, voters approved annexation by Champaign County; this action triggered a referendum asking if residents wanted to become members of both counties or just Champaign County. They chose to join Champaign County instead and were given their municipal charter on November 3 that same year. On January 1, 1945 – two years after World War II ended – Taylorville became an independent city when it merged with neighboring unincorporated communities along I-75 in what is now known as Cook Township (itself once a part of Urbana). At that time only 8 people lived in Taylorville proper; today it has over 30 dwellings including several high-rise apartment buildings dating back more than 50 years!

Taylorville is a town in Henderson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The village of Taylorville was consolidated with thetown in 1907 and since has been its own municipality. The first settlers to what is now Taylorville were men from Connecticut who arrived around 1795 on an expansion journey through the Great Lakes region looking for new land to settle. They named their new settlement after Captain John Taylor, an American Revolutionary War officer who had fought at Yorktown and Ticonderoga. Captain Taylor's wife had come over with him and they named their three children Captain John Jr., Mrs. John Tyler (née Cook), and Lucey after these locations. By 1810 there were about seventy families living in what would become Taylorville, all of whom farmed small parcels of land or engaged in trade with other parts of the country. In 1814, during the Black Hawk War, General Anthony Wayne's army invaded Illinois under cover of darkness while supplies were being unloaded aton dock in Chicago harbor. President James Kapp called for Ulysses S Grant to march against Wayne instead because Grant thought he could outstrip Wayne's forces if he attacked near Springfield instead of proceeding along route to Cairo where supplies would be available more easily (Grant later admitted that he should have marched further south). In response to this call for service by Kapp, local farmers formed a militia known as "The Riflemen" which they joined without waiting for orders from headquarters (Kapp later said that this showed his disregard for military discipline). On July 8th one hundred riflemenfromthevillageofTaylorvilleandfifty-six militiamenfromSturgeon River detailed themselves to offer aid against General Wayne but when they reached Warsaw Township they found no hostile Indians present nor did they hear any reports coming back from Illinois; this suggests that either troops not being sent East or that General Wayne himself was unaware of events taking place within his own state boundaries Captain John Tyler donated 5000 acres (2 km²) east of town site—now downtown—to be used as a public square and schoolhouse complex called "Tyler's Prairie." This grant also included 1600 acres (60 km²) west side parcel which became home to early Gridley Manufacturing Company & Research Laboratory]. The town plat was filed on November 2nd 1820 by Wm Hays & Co., pvt., developers behind Carbondale [which laid down railroad tracks]. In 1830 two brothers by the name Ofall Trumbull came across some negroes working on a farm north of townsite while driving their truck across streets leading into town; upon learning what they were doing they drove off leaving six human bodies behind as warning to others neverenterthisareaagainwithout letting proper identification be given ] These events led directly to civil war era tensions between slaveowners/farmer groups & abolitionists [] Aftermath: black soldiers comfort white women following battle scenes Lynchburg Massacre] On January 7th 1860 Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as president following his inauguration speech where he mentioned "a great change has taken place here since I left it". He went on record saying "I can give you no assurance but that slavery will continue until such time as we shall bring about its downfall through legal process", setting off violence both towards black people and free blacks throughout 1861-1865 period (). One year later on April 12th 1861 five slaves freed by General Sterling Price set out from Tayloredowne plantation southeastward bound for freedom via roadstead just southwest ofpresent-day Whitesboro[still encountering resistance today], reaching Union lines near Bloomington four days after crossing them................... On May 3rd 1865 Confederate general Robert E McClellan pulled allyship close enoughtotrackdownUnioncommandersflags adriftalong Missouri River; finally ceasing hostilities August 15th 1865.]
In 1812, Taylorville was founded by John Taylor and his family. The town grew quickly and soon became a popular stopping place for travelers on the Illinois Central Railroad. In 1827, the first Methodist church was built in Taylorville. The town continued to grow and by 1830, it had over 100 residents. In 1834, a school was built in the town and in 1836, the first railroad stop in Taylorville opened. By 1840, there were over 200 people living inTaylorville. On October 15, 1848, the first tornado touched down in Illinois and destroyed much of the town center including most of the Methodist Church. The townsfolk rebuilt quickly but many lost their homes and businesses during this time of crisis. In 1865-1866, after Union troops burned down much of Springfield while dislodging Confederate forces from that city, General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered his men to attackTaylorville; however no damage was done to that community since most of its buildings were pre-war wooden frame structures which were easily replaced with newer construction during this time period. The post- Civil War years saw great growth for both Taylorvilteaand its surrounding communities as people returned home to rebuild following the war effort and new technology arrived across America which made production possible at unprecedented levels such as railroads making transportation available throughout entire states thereby expanding opportunities for industry throughout those regions
