Taylorville is located on a small stream that flows through the city center. The first settler in what became Taylorville was Levi Richardson in 1827. He built a cabin on the banks of the stream and named it “Richardson” after himself and his son-in-law Joshua Harkins. The first post office in Taylorville was established in 1829; it was called “Harkins” until 1836 when it changed to “Taylorville” because Postmaster General James Harkins had moved there from Quincy, Illinois. In 1838, John Dickson founded an agricultural colony near present day Burlington, Indiana which he named “Dicksonstown” after himself and David Dickson (a Congressman from Kentucky). For many years this community functioned as a shipping point for goods coming down the Kankakee River into Illinois before finally closing its doors following World War II due to rising costs associated with shipping goods overland from points eastward across America. In 1865, John Clements purchased 640 acres adjacent to present day downtown Taylorville from David Dixon for $1 per acre This land would later become home to what are now downtown blocks including First National Bank Building (now Wells Fargo), North Side Academy (now Shurtleff School), University Park Shopping Center (now Sears mall), Central Market Place (now American Eagle Outfitters) and North Side Senior Apartments (now Highmark Suites by Hilton). Taylorville is a small town in the southern Illinois town of Carbondale. It was founded in 1836 by John Taylor and his family. The community was named after General Ulysses S. Grant, who had been an important figure in the American Civil War and later served as President of the United States. Today, Taylorville is a small, unincorporated community located about 15 miles south-southwest of Carbondale. The first settlers to Taylorville were John Taylor, his wife Martha Jane (née Hickey), and their three children: John J., James P., and Sarah A. For many years, the Taylors operated a grocery store on Main Street near present day State Route 159. In 1848, they built a new store on what is now Third Street which became one of the most popular tourist attractions in the town. In 1850, Anna Luella Cook moved to Taylorville from Rockford with her husband Samuel Cook and their two children: Lemuel W., age 5 months, and Hester E.?3 years old. Anna soonestablished herself as an active businesswoman in the community; she ran a school for young girls and cooked meals for various residents during winter months when there was no food available elsewhere. In 1861, Mrs. Cook donated land to build a Presbyterian church on Maple Avenue which remainded instrumental intil today in providing religious services to local residents.-Mrs Anna Luella Cook
Taylorville was founded in 1802 by Joel Axtell and John Morris. The community grew rapidly, and in 1824 the first school was built. In 1835, the town had a population of 350 people and it became a city in 1865. The population decreased during World War II, but has since increased again.
