Air Force Deployed Gift History in Taylorville, Illinois began in 1947 with the first deployment of the A-6 Intruder. The air force has deployments to many different countries and regions over the years. In 2003, members of the Air National Guard donated a KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft to be deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom. This was the first time that an Air National Guard unit had donated an airplane to active duty in Iraq. The Air National Guard also donated two Humvees for use by Special Forces during Operation Neptune's Spear in Afghanistan. These donations were Keys To Victory andOperation Neptune's Spear Museum Tours which allowed civilians and military personnel from throughout Illinois to tour the museum dedicated to these events. In 2007, members of the United States Coast Guard donated a MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter for use by Central Command during Operation Neptune's Spear as well as various other donating helicopters. This was another key victory for our military community as it allowed us to help our partners achieve their goals while keeping citizens safe. Since 2009, members of the Navy have sent items such as USS Enterprise missiles (SSN 727) and USS Monterey torpedoes (SSN 822) back home every year as part of Gifts For Warriors program which helps preserve naval history across America’s waters. This program is also supported through Donate To Heroes which allows civilians to donate equipment or materials used by our military forces at local facilities around America

The Taylorville Air National Guard deployed a gift history in September of 1945. The gift was given to the air force by Mrs. J.B. Hentges from courtesty of her husband, Maj. Gen. John Barden, commander of VIII Bomber Command during World War II and VII Supreme Commander for Air Forces in Europe (ACE). Maj. Gen. Barden recalled that he received a letter from Mrs. Hentges expressing her appreciation for the airplane parts that were being donated to the war effort by her son-in-law, Lt.-Colonel Cletus Wiegand, Jr., an Army engineer working on RAF Bomber Command's operations at RAF Wyton in England. The colonel had been personal friends with Maj. Gen. Barden since their days as classmates at West Point together in the 1920s and 1930s when Wiegand was just a cadet fresh out of college and Maj.-Gen."Gen."Barden was one of those Generals who could always be counted on to make things happen" according to then Colonel Wiegand's daughter, Dr.. Jane Weigel now retired from teaching engineering at Northern Illinois University where she is also a Emeritus Professor.). The plane parts arrived in good condition and were immediately put to use repairing airplanes belonging to VIII Bomber Command during World War II; IX Bomber Command during the Korean War; XII BomberCommand during Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan; XIV BomberCommand in support of Desert Storm against Iraq; XV BomberCommand during Hurricane Katrina as well as other missions throughout the 1990s and 2000s while being refurbished at Edwards AFB California until its final retirement in 2006 after more than 50 years service!
Taylorville is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Blue Island, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Taylorville were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1836. They built a log cabin on the present site of the town in 1838. In 1840, a post office was established in Taylorville and remained open until 1856. The first school was built in 1846 and was named for Rev. John Hinsdale (1789-1868). In 1861, the state legislature approved plans to Kansas City with its new territorial capital of Topeka as its new seat. When Kansas City became an independent state, it retained much of what had been proposed for Taylorville including land east of Center Street which formed the nucleus of today's downtown area. Taylorville, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population of the town was 693 as of the 2010 census. For most of its history, Taylorville has been a stop on the Underground Railroad. In 1837, when Kentucky slaveholder James Buchanan was elected president, he ordered General Andrew Johnson to cross the free state of Missouri and freedom his slaves at Taylorville. The transfer took place on April 12th and 13th and it is said that over 100 slaves were freed that day. In 1865, after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Union troops burned down several homes in Taylorville in order to conceal the movement of Confederate soldiers from Union patrols. In 1870-71, during the American Civil War, General John Pope invaded McLean County with an army of 10,000 men looking for rebel sympathizers. He discovered only 2 people living in Taylorville - one blacksmith and his wife. Pope decided not to burn down the town but instead left it unguarded for two days while he looted houses nearby. When he returned there were no buildings left standing except for a few barns and outhouses (which remain today). In 1935-36 Lewis Laughlin built a large textile factory in what are now known as Laughlin Park neighborhoods west of downtown Taylorville. The plant produced more than 1 million yards of fabric per week until its closure in 1984 due to pollution concerns; however some remnants can still be seen today around Laughlin Drive and University Avenue NW near Granite Technical High School which served as Laughlin's corporate campus until 2009. It is also alleged that this area was used by local gangs as their turf during prohibition years.
Taylorville was founded in 1824 by Reverend John Taylor. It became a town in 1836, and the community received its first post office in 1839. The first school was built in 1840. In 1865, the town passed an ordinance establishing a fire department andestablishing a cemetery. The population of Taylorville peaked at 2,500 in 1880, but declined to 1,500 by 1920.
