Sycamore is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sycamore were French traders in 1695 and they named it "Château-Girard" after Francois Giraud, one of their number. In 1814, Elijah Lovejoy built a cabin on the banks of the Fox River and called it "Lovejoy's Logging Camp." The first post office was established in 1827 in what is now Sycamore. In 1847, Abraham Lincoln was born in nearby Downers Grove and spent his early years there before moving to Ripon Township where he grew up and served as a justice of the peace. He later moved to Sycamore to become a politician and First Lady Marianne Booth Lincoln attended school here. A cotton gin was erected by John Marshall & Son in 1860 at what is now Canal Street for processing short tons of Indian corn that had been brought overland from Iowa by wagonloads. The mill closed around 1870 but reopened as an steam-powered mill in 1903 when corn became more available for export. The mill shut down again in 1970 but reopened as an Allis-Chalmers company subsidiary store several years later before closing again around 2006; it has since been demolished The first local cross country track race took place on July 4th 1895 between two teams from North Side High School (now Grayslake) with Isaac Hurst driving; this race would be considered one of the earliest high school athletic contests staged anywhere outside America In 1901 all schools south side high school merged into north side high school becoming known as Grayslake High School which still exists today
