Sycamore, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Sycamore was organized on November 12, 1848 by a group of farmers who had moved to the area from nearby Scranton Township. The name "Sycamore" comes from an Algonquin word meaning "a large sugar maple." A post office called Sycamore was established in 1857, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. The first school in the village was built on North Court Street about 1870. In 1892 the Village Board authorized the erection of a high school building on East Market Street which became known as Park Avenue High School. In 1916 Park Avenue High School became Griggs High School; and then Griggs Junior-Senior High School in 1959 when that school district merged with Oak Lawn-Griggs Township (later Cook County) to form Griggs-Oak Lawn Unified District No. 1. In 1957, following annexation by Cook County of much of neighboring Rockford Township (later DuPage County), most of what is now Sycamore lay within that new county boundaries; but since then some development has occurred within the limits of Skokie Township (now Kane County). According to 2000 US Census data, there are 2,565 people living in Sycamore Village Unit 1 and 2 combined; 822 people living outside village boundaries alone: 514 men and 438 women age 15+, 287 working age adults not employed or looking for work; 3116 students attending schools inside or outside village boundaries—for a total enrollment of 2427 students (). For 2001–2002USCensus data it shows that population growth for all units combined has slowed slightly (.8% per year), but for individual residents growth rates have increased (+13%) due mainly to births (+2%). Most residents here commute into larger municipalities such asChicago or Evanston just over their hamlet borders - with only 0.4% commuting out (.3% for villagers vs 0%.9% for non-villagers). These trends suggest that while there may be some potential suburbanization/gentrification happening within walking distance (<10%), overall village life remains relatively unchanged since 1960 despite rapid population growth (>10%). Neighborhoods have seen various name changes (Lemon Grove/Aurora Hills being one recent example) reflecting changing demographics around them while still retaining community values like children’s playing fields/picket fences between homes and playgrounds etc... According to 2006 US Census data againVillage 1 & 2 together havegrown by only .8% while adjacent neighborhoods have grown faster (+13%)
