Swansea, Illinois is a small town in Johnson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. Swansea is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Statistical Area. Swansea is located on I-90 and U.S. Route 36 and has a full sized post office with ZIP code 62006. The community was founded by Welsh immigrants in 1881 as "New Cottage". It name changed to Swansea in 1886 after the village of Swenell near Llandudno became their new home. The first post office opened in Swansea on May 12, 1886 under the name New Cottage receiving mail from Carbondale and other nearby villages as well as Chicago. In 1906, the name change to Swansea because of its location on I-90 just south of Carbondale making it one of the few towns in Johnson County that had access to this busy interstate highway system at that time. Swansea's economy has been based primarily on agriculture for most of its history with some major businesses included: First National Bank (1896), Dairy Queen (1968), Post Office (1986), Swansea Methodist Church (19th century) and First Baptist Church (present day). Today there are a variety of businesses including two restaurants/bars; one drive thru restaurant; three retail stores; two agricultural businesses; six family housing units; three water companies - all owned by municipalities withinJohnson County - Swansea Township and Albion Township; four churches - Holy Cross Parish Episcopal Church(founded 1865), Second Baptist Church(founded 1892), Evangelical Lutheran Church in America(established 1951) and PresbyterianChurchUSA(established 1962).
