As one of the oldest and most well-known artisan coffee shops in Swansea, Illinois, The Coffee House has been providing quality java to locals and visitors alike for over 50 years. With a rich history that goes back to the early 1930s, The Coffee House has something for everyone who loves caffeine and good conversation. The first incarnation of The Coffee House was founded by Harry D’Angelo in 1933. D’Angelo was a successful Italian immigrant who started his own grocery store in Swansea. He decided to start selling pre-packaged coffee beans and started calling himself The Coffee House. In 1938, Harry changed the name to The Cafe after finding out that he couldn’t trademark “coffee house” because it had already been used by other businesses in town. In 1951, Artie Weinberger became the first employee at The Cafe. Artie was originally from New York City and had worked as a waiter before coming to America to work at Jethro Tull’s studios. After many years working at Jethro Tull studios, Artie decided he wanted a place where he could make his own coffee drinks and sell them under his own name. He opened up The Cafeteria on Polk Street in Swansea in 1951 with his partner Leo Glassman (a friend from New York). Artie continued working at the cafe until 1966 when he passed away due to cancer. LeoGlassman took over running the cafe until 1967 when Harry D’Angelo retired from business operations due to health problems*. In 1970, Harry's son Dino took over operations of the business* *. Since its founding, The Coffee House has been run by family members* *. Today, there are six employees working at The Coffee House: four sons of Harry D'Angelo*, one daughter of Dino Glassman*, one granddaughter of Artie Weinberger*, and one great-granddaughter of Arlette Glassman*. Swansea, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,542 at the 2000 census. Swansea is part of the Springfield–Highland City Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Swansea" comes from Welsh for "fortress." In 1837, General John Potter moved his army across the Ohio River and took up residence on a bluff overlooking Swansea. This fortification helped to protect settlers in what would become Swansea Township. From this location, General Potter could see all of Kentucky and Tennessee that he might need as allies in his war against Mexico. For many years after General Potter's death, Swansea was known as the "Queen of England's County." In 1868, when McMillin Township was created withinMcLean County, Swansea became its first township. Today there are over 20 townships in McLean County with similar names (e.g., Albion Heights/Albion Hills/Bloomington Heights/Brooklyn Heights/Cincinnati Gardens/Erie Gardens/Fishersburg Heights/Garden City Heights/Hillcrest Manor Homes), but no village or town bears the name of Swansea Township proper. In 1872-73 Counties' Court proceedings were held at what is now called Court House Square while Judge Samuel Cinglass presided over trials from Macomb Parish courthouse on Market Street in downtown Warsaw; prior to that Courthouse had been destroyed by fire on October 17th 1871 (see below). That same year an act was passed giving power to create additional townships within each county and accordingly we have Albion Hills (1872), Bloomington Heights (1873), Cincinnati Gardens (1874), Elmira (1875), Findlay Heights (1876) Garden City Heights (1877), Highland Park(1910) and Warsaw itself(1915). The original court house located at 421 Elmira St which burned down on October 17th 1971 served as an interim courthouse until completion of Court House Square building which opened December 4th 1976 across from Warsaw High School now home to The Polish American Museum & Library
