The history of the Swansea, Illinois Army National Guard begins with the organization in 1885. The guard was initially called the "Swansea Regiment" and raised for military service in the Mexican-American War. After being mustered into service, the regiment served in various capacity until 1898 when it was disbanded. In 1903, a new army unit was organized called the 1st Infantry Brigade and its members were recruited from throughout Illinois. On November 17th of that year, artillerymen from Company A, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment (Scottish Borderers) arrived at Swansea to begin their training under United States Col. John J. Pershing III. When World War I began on April 6th of 1914, Unit A had already been mobilized and prepared for war. As part of 1st Brigade Combat Team (1-8 Ill.), they fought in France and Belgium before being shipped back to America on October 8th 1915 as part of Expeditionary Force No 114 (Great Lakes Division). They landed at Anzio on November 3rd 1916 and fought through December 12th before moving south to join up with Fifth Army near Rome Italy on January 29th 1917. Aftermath of World War I: Unit A returned home on October 8th 1915 via shipyards in Mobile, Alabama where they were reassembled as part of Third Brigade Combat Team (3-8 Ill.) The brigade then moved northeast to Camp Dodge Field near Jacksonvilleville on February 26th 1918 where they relieved Eighth Corps troops during Operation Market Garden enroute north to Arnhem Netherlands between September 15-18 1918; earning them a Presidential Unit Citation for their heroism during this operation which took place outside Ofemelen Ridge; also known as “The Death March” due to casualties suffered by both sides while engaged therein including 535 killed/murdered men & 714 wounded/maimed/exhausted soldiers totaling 20%+ ratio compared to American total which stood at around 100%. On May 10th 1919 these same troops participated in an amphibious landing along the Dutch coast codenamed “Iceberg” which resulted in one soldier becoming an amputee due to shellfire prior thereto however he would later be posthumously awarded his Silver Star for his bravery during this engagement thereby becoming one of only four Americans ever decorated for combat action during World War I despite not serving any duration beyond Shrapnel wound or laceration!

In 1887, General Andrew Johnson ordered an all-out invasion of Mexico and several thousand men from Swansea volunteered to join the effort. They fought bravely against Mexican forces for six months before reaching Mexico City without loss.
Swansea is a city in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,651 at the 2010 census. Swansea is part of the Quad Cities Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Swansea was Nicholas Foote who arrived in 1824. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Plaines River and named it Swansea after his home county of Gloucestershire, England. In 1830, Nathaniel Loomis moved to Swansea from Decatur Township, Indiana and platted what became known as Swansea Heights on high ground near present-day Cedar Street and Park Avenue. In 1833, Samuel Morse founded the Western Union Telegraph Company out of an office located on Park Avenue between Cedar and Oak Streets. Morse soon relocated Western Union's headquarters from Swansea to Baltimore because of concerns about possible patent violations by other companies seeking to build telephone lines throughDecatur Township into which Swansea had been annexed. In 1836–37, John Capps platted what became known as South Wales based upon land he owned north of where Welshpool now stands in Sangamon County. The town site was never developed because early settlers were unable to get enough water or seedable plants for their crops when they first arrived in what is now Swansea Township (later renamed Polk Township). The name "South Wales" may have originated with this group because some members were so anxious to start a new community close to their homes that they forgot their original surnames or hometowns. In 1840–41, James Wetherill organized a wagon train from Ohio headed for Quincy, Illinois on its way eastward through Iowa Territory before reaching Nauvoo Landing on the Mississippi River just south of Chicago on July 16th – one week before Abraham Lincoln won election as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President over Andrew Johnson On October 1st 1840 during regular session of the General Assembly at Carthage Hall following adjournment due to violence at Nauvoo Landing only 3 men remained binding delegates apportioned among circuit court judges elected by popular vote: George Stephenson ( Hancock County), David Whitcomb ( Adams County) and John Brown ( Marshall County) not including Wetherill - all three men had already left for Quincy prior to this day On October 2nd 1840 while attending regular session at Carthage Hall following adjournment William Lloyd Garrison delivered remarks indicting Governor Lincoln's administration which led directly to his impeachment trial two years later On November 15th 1840 afterHenry Clay called for Special Session in order pass resolutions authorizing military service against any nation then under American blockade no action was taken
