Swansea, Illinois is a small town located in the Monmouth County of Illinois. The population of Swansea was 605 at the 2000 census and 544 as of the 2010 census. The name Swansea comes from a Welsh place-name meaning "hollow" or "dungeon." The first whites to arrive in Swansea were farmers who bought land from the local Native American tribe. The area now known as Swansea was part of what was called Cahokia Mounds country. In 1814, General James K. Polk took possession of what is now Monmouth County and named it after him, Polk County, Iowa. In 1827, when Illinois became a state, Polk County was merged with Monmouth County to form Quincy Township. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Quincy Township was renamed Swansea because Union forces had burned down some homes in that town during their raid on Confederate artillery batteries near present day Mount Carmel Cemetery. In 1892, Thomas Ahern founded an agricultural flour mill in what is now Swansea which still operates today. During World War II, General Motors built a plant in Swansea which produced engines for military vehicles such as tanks and bombers.
