Summit is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. Summit is located on the south side of the county and is bordered by Cairo to the east, Plainfield to the north, and Champaign to the northwest. The village of Summit lies within the town. The first settler in Summit was George Waytman in 1827. The post office was established in 1837 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1904. In 1870, a schoolhouse and Methodist church were built around a well near what is now Main Street. A farmstead on this location served as an early community center for residents of Summit Village. In 1910-11, construction began on what would become the current elementary school building; it opened in 1912. The two-story school house also opened that year. In 1922, a new high school (later renamed James Hutton High School) was completed across from the old elementary school building on Depot Road; it replaced Mount Carmel High School which had been closed due to financial irregularities during World War I). In 1957-58, work began on another high school - this time called Montrose High School - which would serve students from Summit Village as well as Cairo and Plainfield. It opened in 1959 and remains operational today (it currently serves students from both villages). In 1984-85, Summit villagers voted to abandon their original name for their new high school - after much deliberation they chose "Summit" instead – following its opening day ceremonies becoming one of only four high schools statewide with that name (the other three being William Jewell College Preparatory School in St Louis County MO and Maynard Wright Jr./North Central State University/East Lansing MI). A new library facility was added to summit village Center Park between 2002-2004; it became known as "The Summits" after incorporation into village government under this name occurred effective November 2004th

Summit is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, on the Chicago River. The population was 20,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located in Cook County. Summit was founded by Upper Ohio settlers in 1836 as a small farming community on the banks of the Chicago River. In 1870, it became one of twenty-eight townships in Cook County, and by 1903 had reached its present size with a population of 30,000 people. The city was named after Mount Rushmore National Monument, which lies just to its east across the river from Summit. The first settler in Summit was John Crain who arrived there in 1836 from what is now West Virginia. He built a log cabin on the bank of the river and named his settlement "Summit." In 1870, he sold his land to Isaac Newton Welch for $1,500 cash and moved his family to Summit with him. On July 4th 1870, Welch organized an election to create a township government for Summit Township which he did not live long enough to see take form: Samuel Prentice Wright was elected as township trustee; George Wickersham served as postmaster; Daniel Fenton became treasurer; and James Sartain performed all official duties until October 1st when Wright took office effective that date also serving as town clerk during that time period also holding other offices such as constable etc., until 1893 when he resigned due to ill health only weeks before annexation into neighboring Ravenswood TownshipLuther Parsons served as town moderator during this time frame along with Charles Hinton who played an important role within local politics for many years prior to his death at 96 years old on November 9th 2005
