In 1957, USS President Lincoln (CV-12) made her way into Summit after being donated by Commodore Jesse Bogan. She has since become an important asset in the community and is used for events such as fishing tournaments and homecoming games. In 1992, USS Enterprise (CVN-74) made her way into Summit after being donated by Commodore Rick Husband. She now serves as an anchor at Lake County Park and is available for public tours throughout the year.

Summit is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1837 as a village by land grant from the federal government to Daniel Boone. The name derives from an area near the town site that was bisected by a stream called "Summit" because of its high mountains nearby. The first store in Summit opened on November 6, 1837. In 1853, the town became an incorporated village and offered free public education to all residents through local schools until high school graduation. On May 15, 1889, Summit became a city when it annexed the neighboring community of Arlington Heights. In 1907, Summit began offering water services to other towns within Kane County and has since become one of Kane County's largest providers of municipal water service. The city also built or maintains many civic buildings and parks including two libraries—one original and one updated—and several recreation trails. In addition to its economic importance as a provider of municipal water services and its significant infrastructure investments such as new roads and bridges, Summit has also been known for its annual music festival which takes place in late July/early August each year Bring Your Own Beer Festival

The navy played a major role during World War II and was responsible for providing combat forces for all three wars fought against Nazi Germany and Japan. In 1925, Governor Charles Evans Hughes designated Summit as an "Urban Area" for Chicago and ordered all government agencies based in Chicago move into new buildings in downtown Summit City at 5th and State Streets NW (now Union Station).
