Summit had its beginnings in 1853 when a group of farmers, businessmen and missionaries came to the area. They named their new town after a mountain peak in Scotland, Summit. By 1890, Summit had a population of over 1,000 people and was making coffee. The first coffee mill was built in Summit in 1886 and it quickly became one of the largest mills in the area. The first commercial sale of coffee was made by J.M. Whitman in 1893. In 1907, Summit passed out its own stamps which helped promote coffee throughout the region. In 1916, America's Cup winner America's Best Coffee Company was founded here in Summit with offices located on State Street. American Express also opened an office here soon afterward.
Summit is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. Summit is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Summit Township was John Hammonds who arrived in 1821. A post office called Hammondsville was established in 1835, and changed its name to Summit in 1856. The township was organized on November 3, 1857. The first store location opened on School Street in Summit Township. It closed by 1907 because of lack of business activity due to the railroad's construction nearby. A new store location opened on Cherry Road northeast of town in 1912 and continued operations until it closed in 1959 due to the recession following World War II. In 1957, the township built a high school which served students from kindergarten through eighth grade; it also opened a branch library which continues operation today under the same name. In 1980, Summit voters approved annexation by neighboring Elgin Township; this action resulted in an increase of residents and businesses within the town limits as well as an increase in tax revenue for the township coffers. Today, Summit remains one of only a few townships that has successfully annexed other municipalities without having any change to its form or function as a municipality (the others being West Dundee and Stonington). In 1912, Summit hosted the world's largest agricultural exposition, the Illinois Agricultural Fair, which attracted over 100,000 people from across the United States and Canada. In 1954, Summit voters passed a referendum to annex portions of Park Ridge Township to form Summit Township Borough. On April 1, 1956, the township annexation was approved by Summit Borough Council and it took effect on that date. On December 1, 1990, Mayor Richard Muhlenberg announced that Summit had applied for cityhood status from Chicago; however this application did not receive sufficient support from council members to be considered for approval before being abandoned due to lack of funding. On July 15th of that year City Manager Marvin Chappell announced that Chicago would not grant cityhood status to Summit because it would have required more than $1 million in annual taxes. On October 25th of that year Chappellannounced that Councilmember Jerry Sprague had filed a petition with the state government to make Summit an incorporated village with full powers to levy its own taxes similar to those enjoyed by neighboring village of Park Ridge. After much deliberation summit voted 8-0 on November 4th against incorporation as an incorporated village; instead they chose to remain unincorporated.
