Summit is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Summit was platted in 1872 and named for General John A. Summit, who had been appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant to lead military campaigns in the Kansas–Nebraska Territory during the 1870s. The Village of Summit was organized on February 14, 1907 as a result of an act of the General Assembly of Kane County. On May 3, 1912, Summit became a full-time municipality with a vote by its residents; it had always been an unincorporated community located within Kane County but has since been incorporated into municipal government. On December 8, 1951, voters in Summit passed a resolution adopting the modern form of cityhood which allows for direct city council representation instead of ward representativeness once all other conditions are met including voter approval through referendum or township board approval over two-thirds majorities). In early 2009 it was announced that Mayor Rick Majerus would not seek reelection due to health problems and Assistant Mayor Kathy Kapp would be taking her place until he returns. Summit is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Summit post office was founded on December 15, 1871. The first settler in what is now Summit was John Quinn who arrived in 1836 and named it after his home town of Quincy, Massachusetts. A few years later he married Rebecca Stevens and they platted a claim near what is now Summit on November 17, 1839. They named their new town after Mount Washington which had just been peakside discovered by Captain John Stephenson in 1795 while exploring the area for fur traders looking to open up Algonquin country west of Chicago. In 1840 when Sandwich Township was organized from parts of McLean and Wayne counties, Summit became its seat with Nathaniel Barnes as its first mayor. In 1846 when Springfield Township was organized from part of McLean county it merged into Summit so that both towns would have one strong municipal center to support trade and industry growth. The name change to Summit came about because an early settler there claimed that if he called himself "Summit" then others would think he owned all the land in the township which did not actually exist at that time! In 1870 when Normal School opened in Peoria some people decided to move out of Springdale due to lack of space so they formed a group called "The Pioneer Citizens" and started moving supplies into Junction City from where they planned on travelling downriver to form their own society- this led to the first train trip through Summit railroad station on May 10th 1870 with soldiers from nearby Fort Riley coming along for company! On October 3rd 1870 James Prentice donated 640 acres (2 km²) north of present day Highway 12 east of junction with Route 66 for $1 per acre (3/4ths share). This land forms the current community which today has over 2,000 residents within its limits! On July 8th 1971 voters approved annexation by Peoria making it official! On January 11th 1980 local fire district #2 merged with District 5 located just south of I-70 creating one large fire agency including all surrounding townships as well as most or all unincorporated areas within those boundaries! So much happened during this time that it's impossible to write about every event but we will give you a taste here: In 1984 two hikers were killed while climbing Mt Rushmore National Monument; On February 14th1985 two men were shot dead while sitting inside a car dealership at night outside Palatine Mall; On March 25th 1990 five men were shot dead while walking across state line near Galesburg; On April 6teenth 1992 three people died when an engine failure caused a derailment on Interstate 90 just south of Carbondale; Finally on September 3rd 1993 six people died as a result OFA floods originating from heavy rains upstream!! These are only some examples but there are likely many more that we have not mentioned because they too participated actively or were directly impacted by various events which led up to summit’s incorporation into Peoria–Springfield metropolitan statistical area!
Summit, Illinois was once a thriving community with a rich history. The community began as part of the Vermilion Hills Township in Cook County, Illinois, on the banks of the Mississippi River. In 1871, Union soldiers burned down the township hall and other buildings in order to liberate slaves. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1938 when it had a population of over 10,000 people. However, by the early 1940s, Summit had shrunk back to around 6,000 people due to World War II and the Great Depression. During the war years, Summit also played an important role as a military base. In 1945, after two years of construction efforts, Summit became home to America's first operational nuclear weapon laboratory known as Pohl Laboratory. Today, Summit is an unincorporated community located in Kane County that retains some of its original features including a library and post office.
