Summit is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Summit was platted in 1871 as a post office and community by George Stephenson and associates. The name "Summit" comes from an early settler's account of seeing "a large range of mountains on one side and a large plain on the other" while traveling through the area. In 1881, the first school was built in Summit and it served township students until 1908 when it became a public school with students from both Summit Township and Addison Township. The Town of Summit platting occurred due to its location strategic for railroad trackage east-west through Kane County; accordingly, much development has taken place within its boundaries since ceding incorporation to Chicago in 1905 including two hospitals (the present Mount Sinai Hospital opened in 1915) various shopping malls as well as numerous high-rise buildings housing businesses such as Sears, Kmart, JCPenney and Ford Lincoln Motor Company. In recent years some downtown business owners have started plans to redevelop their properties into mixed-use districts that would include residences along with commercial space or office use. Summit was founded in 1837 by John E. Summit and his wife, Sarah S. Davenport. The Pendleton Manufacturing Company, a local flour mill, became the first company to settle in the area. The community grew quickly and by 1852 had a population of 350 people. By 1865, Summit had become an agricultural center with 50 miles of irrigated land and 10 businesses. In 1876, the US Post Office was established at Summit and it would continue to serve as its primary source of mail until 1979. In 1902, the Illinois Central Railroad (IC) arrived in town and started construction on a line from Chicago to Peoria. This new development increased Summit's importance as a transportation hub for the surrounding region. By 1907, IC had completed its mainline from Peoria to Rockford and Summit became an important railroad junction serving both cities as well as their surrounding farmersocket communities. In 1916, ICT merged with other railroads forming the Chicago Great Western Railway (CGW). GW continued to serve as Summit's primary rail connection until its closure in 1946. During World War II, Summit served as an airfields for bomber groups based in nearby Rockford and Chicago metropolitan areas; during this time, it also acquired some military post office facilities including a jail (1946-1948) and several barracks (1948-1954). With the end of World War II came economic prosperity for townspeople; industry blossomed with new jobs being created in engineering, plastics manufacturing, agriculture etc.; however social unrest persists today due to lack of affordable housing opportunities within town boundaries Today summit is still home to many small business owners who are struggling against skyrocketing real estate prices which have forced many residents out into neighboring townships or even outside of united states altogether
Summit was founded in 1871 by Captain John Stephenson and his wife, Lydia. The town was named for the summit of a small hill in its vicinity. The Stephenson family had a mill located on the stream that ran through it. They also raised chickens and pigs, and sold milk to neighboring towns. In 1875, Captain Stephenson donated land to the village for an Episcopal church, school, and other purposes. In 1887, Summit became a city with a population of just over 100 people. It soon became known as one of the most important agricultural communities in Illinois because of its production of hay, cornmeal, wheat flour, butter and eggs. The town's economy changed during World War II when many industries closed down due to wartime shortages. However, thanks to various business ventures such as cold storage operations and a post office (now called Summit Lake), Summit has preserved some remnant aspects of its pre-war society.
