As the world's largest and oldest coast guard service, the Coast Guard has a rich history that can be seen in its gifts to citizenry around the world. The Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in Summit, Illinois on December 15, 1924. The first Auxiliary members were men who volunteered to help with the response to a hurricane that struck the area two weeks earlier.
Summit is a village in Hendricks County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Summit was founded in 1853 when the Illinois Central Railroad built a rail line through the area. The Village of Summit was formed on November 15, 1968 from portions of Hinsdale and Wilmette Township. The original name for the village was "Hancock". On May 8, 1969, Hancock amended its charter to change its name to Summit and incorporated as a town on November 3rd of that year. The first mayor of Summit was Lloyd Bowers. The current Mayor is Jeff Wessels with Office Hours 9am-5pm Monday thru Friday

Summit is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,951 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The name "Summit" first appeared on maps in 1853 when it was included within the town of Chicago and was spelled "Sumnitz." The current form of the name was given to the City by a group of businessmen led by Nathan W. Sumner in 1907 as an honor for their hometown's role as a center for industry and commerce. Summit grew rapidly due to its location and became one of America's leading industrial cities during the 20th century. In recent years, however, economic problems have caused Summit's growth to slow down. Summit is located on Interstate 90 north-northeast of Chicago and is bordered by Lake Michigan to the west and south; DuPage County to the east; and Kane County to the north. According to the 2010 census, Summit has 27,951 residents (23% African American, 17% Hispanic/Latino, 10% Asian Pacific Islander). According to legend, Native Americans lived near what is now Summit until about 1800 when they were pushed out by white settlers who began clearing land for farming. Jesuit missionaries established a mission here in 1795 which soon became known as Mount Carmel Mission after its location on Mount Carmel in Lebanon Heights outside Chicago. The first post office opened in 1827 under this name with Samuel Hoadly serving as receiver general that year. By 1840 there were 5 churches in Summit with over 100 adherents serving among them: St Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church (founded 1841), Our Lady Help Of Christians (1846), Holy Redeemer Catholic Church (1850), Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church (1852), Polish Nationalist Parish (founded 1865) and German Reformed Parish(founded 1870). When word spread about good land available near Chicago for settlement by European immigrants seeking new homes following Grant’s Indian Removal Act of 1830 many Germans emigrated including some pastors from Königsberg who founded Christlich-Deutscher Garten Colony near Decatur on May 12th 1830 under pastor Friedrich August Schultz with 250 men under his leadership who arrived at Fort Dearborn on September 21st 1830 . Among these early German settlers were Albrecht Dürerbach from Augsburg whose family had long immigrated through Switzerland before landing at Saginaw Bayou where he built a mill according to his own account opposite Sandwich Landing just below Mackinac Island today’s US 231 bridge across Straits Of Mackinac Bridge linking Lake Huron directly with international waters off Canada . In 1847 businessman David Starr Jordan purchased 2 lots adjacent to each other - Lots 4 & 5 - lying northeast corner lot #1 between I-90 & I-294nw lot #2 between I-290 & I-294Ealong side Soo Line Railroad tracks running northeasterly into Chicago then easterly into Comstock Park thence easterly along railroad right-of way into park Lot 8 adjoining Kimball Estate abutting present day Armour Elementary School lot 9 adjoining present day North Side Stadium South Side High School lot 10 adjoining present day Harrison Road intersection
