Streator, Illinois is a small town in the southern half of Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the north side of the Chicago River. The population was 9,890 at the 2010 census. The name "Streator" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where deer feed." The first settler in what is now Streator was Nicholas D’Angelo and his family who arrived in 1818. They built a log cabin on the banks of the river. In 1829, John Morse moved to Streator from Decatur and started a gristmill that still operates today. In 1846, Samuel Capps bought land near present-day Streator and laid out a village square that included four churches and two schools. He named it after his friend and business associate, General Jonathan Ogden Wright. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln came through Chicago on his way to be inaugurated as president of the United States. He stopped at Wright's mill which then served as his campaign headquarters before continuing downriver to Maywood Station. There he placed his hat on top of one of the millstones before giving a speech that helped make him president. After leaving Washington D C., Lincoln continued on downstream to Streator where he visited Mr Capps' house for dinner before taking an early morning train back upriver to Maywood Station
