Streator, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,777 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Streator was founded by John and Lillie Streator in 1841. The first post office was established in 1845. The Streators were prominent early settlers here and are buried in the village Cemetery. They received their nickname of "The Saints" because they so often traveled to preach Christianity to Native Americans in what is now Kane County. In 1871, they built a mill on the White River that still stands today and became one of the leading commercial forces in the community. In 1916, when World War I began, many residents left for military service; however, some returned home after hostilities ended and continued to operate the mill until it closed its doors in 1949. Today, portions of the mill property remain open as a museum dedicated to this history and also serve as an educational center for students from surrounding townships about local agricultural practices during this time period.. In 1948 Streator's first high school graduated its first class; since then it has grown into one of Kane County's most comprehensive schools with over 1,500 students enrolled across six campuses including two professional schools ( constituting part of Central Illinois University).
