Streator, Illinois is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Arkansas. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. When it first became known as "Streator", it was an unincorporated community on Missouri's border with Kansas. In 1881, a post office called "Streator" was established in what is now Streator Township, Butler County; it operated until 1889. In 1898, when Streator Township was organized into Park County, "Streator" became the county seat. In 1906, Streator had a coal mine that closed and left behind a large tailings pond which still exists today and forms one half of Highway 20 south of town. The mine also produced shale oil which contributed to the state's economy for many years before commercial production ended in 2002. The community experienced another setback in 1978 when two dams were built along streams running through its center: Poolville Dam and Ladd Dam Project. These projects caused extensive flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses within walking distance of the dam sites; however, some have since rebuilt or are being rebuilt thanks to private donations and government assistance programs such as those under way today known as Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) initiatives. A new elementary school opened in 2001 after residents raised money to build one on their own property adjacent to Poolville Dam Site #2 (CDP #1-01-0010). Funding came from proceeds from sales of bonds issued by Pima County to finance portions of CDBG Initiative number 2 - enlarging capacity for current facilities at both schools - funded entirely by private donations (CDP#1-01-0011). As part of this effort $5 million has been invested statewide including $3 million from Pima County alone! Today Streator offers excellent educational opportunities with four local high schools - Griggs High School(grades 9th-12th), Hays Intermediate School District 114 (grades 7th-12th), Parkway Junior/Secondary School(grades 8th-9th) and Park Ridge Elementary School(grades kindergarten through 6th). There are also several colleges locally including renal transplant research hospital Arktis Health Care System located just outside town limits next door to Griggs High school nearby;ITT University Carbondale International Studies Campus serving business students nearby; Arkansas Technology Transfer Center located off IH 40 exit 314W just outside town limits; Perrysburg Area Vocational Technical Institute serving various trades students who attend Perrysburg High School across from the AFB United States Air Force Base bringing diversity & opportunity into ourlocal community

Streator, Illinois is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2000 census. The community was founded in 1852 by pioneer George A. Streator and his family. It is named for him and for granite boulders that he quarried near the village of Sturgeon on the border of Union and McLean Counties. The first residents of what would become Streator were George A. Streator and his wife Emma Muhlenberg Streator, who arrived in 1851 from Germania (now Hamburg) with their two children--George Washington (1850-1937) and Clara Elizabeth (1851-1927). The family erected a log cabin on a hill overlooking the village of Sturgeon about three miles west of present day Streator. They also built a small schoolhouse which served as their home until 1860 when they moved to a larger cabin on the east side of the village square where they remained until their death in 1907. In 1852, George A. Streator purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) including most of what now makes up McLean County from John Silliman for $5 per acre ($100 total), making him one of the earliest settlers in this area. He built an adobe store/farmstead on his land which continued to be used as a farmstead into the 20th century; it still stands today beside highway 165 south of town limits. In 1861, when Adam Putnam organized McLean County, he chose Sturgeon as its county seat; however, because there were only 3 settler families living in Sturgeon at that time, putney moved the county courthouse to Oconomowoc about four miles northwest of town limits so that all cases could be heard by one judge instead of five or more.(Putnam's original plan was to make Oconomowoc county seat but due to lack interest it was changed back to Sturgeon.) By 1865 there were 10 families living in Sturgeon & nearby Oswego Township; however due to World War I & II those numbers dropped precipitously & by 1930 there were just 5 families left living there(including 4 pensioners from Putnam's original settlement). In 1955 all 7 residents remaining lived within 1 mile boundariesof modern day downtown STREETER!
