Streator is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first post office in Streator was established on December 6, 1868. The village was incorporated on February 10, 1893. The name of the original village president was George Fenton. According to the 2010 census, Streator has a total land area of , all of it within the wards of Chicago City Council District 9 and Cook County Boardwalk ward 1. As of the 2000 census, there were 5,075 people living in 1,967 households in Streator Township and 2,532 households within Chicago City Limits (excluding DuPage Village). Of those residents residing in township boundaries only 2% lived east or west of Kedzie Avenue; 95% lived south or north of Cicero Avenue which runs through town center and separates it from other neighborhoods within Chicago borders. As with most villages situated along Route 120/I-55 corridor outside Loop/ South Side neighborhoods - especially as early as 1900s when 90% majority Polish American settlement began - nearly all growth during this period occurred due to suburbanites moving into rural areas adjacent to I-55 corridors seeking escape from inner city crime rates and high housing costs - thus bypassing what could be seen as more desirable villages located closer to downtown cores like Cicero Ave., Bridgeport Rd., Englewood Cliffs Blvd., etcetera while also overlooking less developed rural areas that were rapidly becoming popular destinations for retirees seeking quality country living experiences without having to leave their homes daily commutes into major cities! By 2000s many elderly residents had moved away leaving behind small towns that rapidly gentrified losing much derpitude both economically speaking but also culturally speaking amidst increasing choice for activities available year round locals simply didn't have the same appeal anymore given increased job opportunities nearer downtown cores...thusindering even more why incorporation became an inevitability following today's racially charged politics & partisan warfare over who gets to call themselves "Streator natives"
The community of Streator, Illinois was founded in 1819 by Nicholas Applegate and his family. The town became a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. In 1871, the first post office in the community was opened. The population of Streator peaked at about 400 residents in 1900, but decreased to around 100 residents by 1960. today, there are only 10 residents living in Streator.
