Streator is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Streator was organized on March 20, 1871 through an act of the legislature. The village was named after General George Armstrong Custer and his regiment during the Indian Wars. At first, only men were allowed to vote; but by 1880 women had also become citizens. On February 14, 1907 a tornado touched down near Streator and damaged or destroyed several homes and businesses. There were no injuries reported however many trees were downed in what became known as "The Great Storm". The storm has been called one of the most damaging tornadoes in Illinois history with damage amounting to $250,000+. In 1932 Streator erected its first fire hydrant which still stands today!
The Streator Massacre took place on July 8, 1873, when a group of white farmers killed five black men and three women in the town of Streator, Illinois. The event is still remembered as one of the most shocking moments in American history.
