The Village was organized on December 3, 1871 from portions of the town of Streator and the city of Chicago Heights. The community is located east-southeast of downtown Chicago and west-northwest of the metropolis. It lies within the Kane and McHenry counties areas. According to the 2010 census, Streator has a total area of , all land. The village limits extend to include (from north to south) portions of Kane County and McHenry County. As one result of its location within Cook County – which includes both large cities like Chicago and more rural areas like Aurora –Streator has become an important economic center for that county as well as for neighboring Kane and McHenry Counties. Streator, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Heights-Highland Park, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Streator arrived in 1818 and set up a farm on a bend in the Ottawa River. The community was named for General Arthur Streator (1784-1859), an American general who fought in the Mexican War and the American Civil War. In 1838, General Streator's son, Amos Streator, donated land to build a school and churches in honor of his father. The original school building still stands today and serves as the town hall. The early days of Streator were difficult because there were few resources available. However, over time, the community grew thanks to its strong economic base and access to education. Today, the town has many businesses and cultural attractions including three museums: one specializing in art history and culture; one focused on natural sciences; and one that presents arts programming such as theatrical productions and classical music concerts. In addition to its rich cultural heritage, Streator is also home to some of America's most popular tourist destinations - including Ripon Falls State Park which features glacial lakes; Newtonia National Battlefield which includes an artillery park; as well as Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum which houses important presidential documents from both parties including John F Kennedy's assassination file
Streator, Illinois was founded in 1838 by Samuel and Anna Streator. The town was named for their father, who had died in 1834. The Streators lived there until they moved to Decatur in 1855. In 1870, the town became a county seat and it has remained that way ever since.
