Streamwood, Illinois is a small town located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The population was 3,859 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Allentown-Easton-Middletown, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for George Stephenson and his family who settled there in 1825. Silver Ash coffee beans were first grown here in the 1860s by James Fenton and his brother David. Today's small batch coffee culture began to form in the early 1990s when John Kapp founded Black & Decker Manufacturing Company here. John Kapp's company manufactured a variety of home equipment including routers, drill presses and other hand tools. He also started selling coffee beans from a small shop near his house on Main Street. By 1992, Black & Decker had become one of the largest coffee roasters in America with over 100 stores across 15 states. In 2003, Kapp retired from business ownership and sold his share to two brothers - Jason and Scott - who continue to run Black & Decker as an individual business today. Since 1993, Streamwood has been home to two Dark Roast Coffee trademarks: Gold Medal roast (a blend ofmulti-origin Arabica beans roasted under minimal pressure) and Half& Half (a blend of multi-origin Javabeans roasted slowly). These two trademarks are still used today by Blue Bottle Coffee as well as many other smaller retail partners throughout the United States that purchase their products direct from Dark Roast Coffee Inc.. In 2007,Streamwood became home to its own microbrewery which produces limited release beers made with local ingredients only! The first coffee shop in Streamwood was opened in 1912 by Mr. and Mrs. John J. Reynolds. The Reynolds Coffee Shop was a small, dark, and cramped business with only two customers per hour. In the early 1920s, the Reynolds family sold their business to Harry Ellison and his wife Mabel who added an oven and a grill to the shop’s kitchen. The Ellison Coffee Shop became one of the most popular coffee shops in town with its fresh-roasted beans and delicious sandwiches. In the late 1940s, Harry Ellison passed away and his wife Mabel continued to run the shop until her death in 1984. Upon her death, the shop passed down to her son Rick Ellison who operated it until it closed in 1992.

The most common small batch brewing method is single origin, meaning that the coffee beans were roasted by one person or a small family- this can be Ethiopian, Kenyan, Colombian, or Brazilian. There are many reasons why smaller brewers have been successful for so long: they produce more consistent quality coffee than larger brewers, they can produce lower volumes quickly and with less waste (due to packaging), and they can use smaller batches of beans to get better flavor variations. By using smaller batches of beans and adjusting brewing methods often, small brewers can create unique flavors that are hard to find at larger breweries. One of the earliest examples of small batch coffee was White Mountain Coffee Company's "Olympian" roast which was released in 1971. This roaster was founded by two friends who had tasted White Mountain's earlier releases and decided to make them even better. White Mountain is typically recognized as the first company to release whole bean roasted coffee in significant quantities on a large scale- today they sell over 1 million pounds of whole bean each year. The success of White Mountain helped spawned other similar pioneers such as Peet's Coffee & Tea which started selling its own versions of single origin roast in 1984, Blue Bottle Coffee which began selling its own versions in 1994, Bandai Brewery's Black Label line which began shipping its own signature roast in 2002, and Four Barrel Coffee which began shipping its first ever cup of espresso in 2006. While there are many different iterations of Small Batch Coffee today it all maintains one fundamental principle- handpicked premium Arabica beans from around the world delivered directly to your doorstep!
