Streamwood, Illinois is a town in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 9,516 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1827 as a small farming community on the Milwaukee River. The town's first settler, John Snively, arrived in 1827 and built his home on what would later be known as Snively Road. By 1830, Streamwood had developed into a small village with a post office and nine stores. In 1834, President Andrew Johnson signed an act that created the Village of Streamwood through which all residents were required to live and vote according to their location within the town limits. streamwoodilians voted for their first mayor in 1840 under then-town clerk Nathan Sibley and selectmen Wm Halsey and Asa Whitney served from 1840-1848 inclusive. During this time period, several important events took place that helped shape Streamwood's future as an agricultural center: In 1845, George Stephenson built the first railroad line in Illinois along what would become Loop 15th Street/River Road (now I-90). This event helped spur further development of Streamwood as one of the leading agricultural communities in America; by 1850, stream wood had over 100 businesses employing over 1,000 people! In 1860 Cemetery Township was organized adjacent to Streamood after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated – it became official government land six years later! However, much like many other towns throughout America during this time period – including Chicago – stream wood continued to struggle economically due to heavy competition from neighboring cities such as Chicago and Decatur! By 1870 however things began to change when "the great cotton famine" hit American soil; mills closed everywhere due to low demand for cotton exports! With fewer jobs available and prices skyrocketing accordingly – many farmers Defaulted on their mortgages which lead directly to foreclosure among many of these households!! With most citizens struggling financially – some turned towards crime or piracy in order make ends meet….. until today when there are very few traces left from those early days…..except for one old woman who still lives near Highway 30 outside of town!!!
Streamwood was first settled in 1812 by the Potawatomi tribe. The town was named for a small stream that flows through the area. The town began to grow rapidly after it was annexed by Rockford in 1868. In 1916, Streamwood became the capital of Illinois.
