The Streamwood Coast Guard Station has been providing law enforcement and emergency services to the community of Streamwood since 1914. The Station's rich history can be found in both its physical structure and the items it provides for the public. The first Coast Guard station in Streamwood was built on a site that is now used as part of the Park District. Construction began on October 3, 1914, and the station was completed on November 1, 1914. At that time, it was known as Coast Guard Station no. 2. In 1916, a new station was built at 5555 N Highway 61 in nearby Downers Grove. This location provided more space for personnel and became known as Coast Guard Station 3rd Floor. In 1949, another new station was built at 6090 W State Street in nearby Wheaton. This location served as Coast Guard Station 4th Floor until it closed in 1978 due to budget cuts. In 1992, a new coast guard station was built at 7100 block of Veterans Boulevard inStreamwood proper. The building had an initial cost of $27 million dollars and opened on September 8, 1993 with jurisdiction over all of Cook County along with Elgin Heights and Elmhurst neighborhoods within the city limits of Chicago (though jurisdiction over those areas continued to be exercised through jurisdictional agreements between Chicago and other municipalities). Since its inception, the Streamwood coast guard station has offered a variety of services including law enforcement; marine emergencies;routine safety inspections;and debris removal during Hurricane Katrina in 2005-2006-2007-2008-2009-2010
