The town is also home to two factories which produce materials for Sterling's economy: one produces car parts and the other produces glass products. Sterling was founded in 1871 by James A. Boyd and his family. The first store in town was built on Center Street and operated until around 1910. In 1908, the Boyd family sold their business to John Fenton and his sons Harry and Floyd Fenton, who operated it until 1971 when it changed hands again - this time to Bill & Jane Easley who ran it until 2003 when it went through another sale and became part of the new Kane County Schools System. Since then, all but one of Sterling's stores have been closed down or moved away from town altogether due to competition from larger towns such as Downers Grove, IL; Evanston IL; Chicago IL; Glen Ellyn IL; Mishawaka IN; Peoria IL; Normal MN; Anoka MN; Waterloo IA The only remaining store is currently run by local residents Jeff & Barb Flattery who opened it in 2006 after moving from out of state that year with their kids (now adults). It has been a source of community pride for many years because its Owners never sit on company profits or use them for themselves but instead reinvest them back into the store - something that still remains an unknown commodity for most businesses these days outside of large metropolitan areas like Chicago or Boston MA etc where ownership often means control over resources/profit margins rather than reinvestment back into community coffers

Sterling, Illinois was founded in 1819 by John and Martha Sterling. The town was named for the sterling silver coins that were used to finance the early settlers’ journey westward. In 1847, the Sterling post office was established in the town and remains in operation today. The population of Sterling increased rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of new industry development in the local area. By 1900, Sterling had a population of over 1,500 people and it remained an important community until after World War II when it dwindled to less than 100 inhabitants. Today, Sterling is a small unincorporated community located approximately 10 miles east of Moline on I-290. It is home to a small museum which includes antique items from its history, as well as displays on local history events and residents.
