In Sterling, Illinois, the history of gift giving goes back to at least 1871. That year, a gentleman named John Fenton donated land to the community in order to start a school. The first Sterling School was built on this property and operated for thirty-six years. In 1912, Mrs. Lillian Golden donated a large piece of land next door to the original school in order to create a new educational institution called the Western Illinois Normal School (WIL). This institution offered courses in education, business Administration, and law. In 1949, WIL became an affiliate of Northwestern University and continued offering these courses until its closure in 1984. During its time as an affiliated institution, WIL served as both the formal home of Northwestern’s Department of Business Administration and also as the location where students from all over the United States would come to learn about business and economics. In 1978, another educational institution was founded in Sterling by Dr. Julius Epstein with the goal of providing quality education for local residents throughout Northern Illinois. Dr. Epstein created North Central College which offers programs such as business administration, engineering/ technology studies, health sciences/fitness programming, criminal justice/law enforcement training opportunities,and more than seventy-five associate degree programs with locations throughout Northern Illinois! Today North Central College is one of America’s leading comprehensive university organizations with campuses located in Decatur (Illinois), Champaign (Illinois), Chicago (Chicago), Peoria (Illinois), Rockford (Indiana), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Bloomington (Minnesota) and Springfield( Missouri).
