Coffee has been a part of the Sterling, Illinois community for over 100 years. The first coffee house in town was opened in 1867 by J.D. Kramer and his brother-in-law, Anthony Genovese. In 1919, Mr. & Mrs. John Wickersham started the first convenience store in town and it is said that they enjoyed buying coffee from the local farmers while on their walks around town. In 1925, Stanley Karp founded the first paper mill in Sterling and he bought a truckload of beans from Rheingold Coffee Company in Chicago to start selling his coffee at the mill. In 1938, Mr. & Mrs. Harry Weisbrot opened their own grocery store which became known as The Weisbrot Place after they purchased the building next door (now known as The Gables). The popularity of coffee continued to grow throughout World War II as many people turned to it for sustenance during times of austerity; this led to more than 20 Krupp Coffee plants being built in Sterling during wartime production capacity! After World War II ended, Sterling's population grew so rapidly that more than one half of all new housing constructed within a five-mile radius was developed within 10 years! That growth continue until 1967 when Mayor James Nolen made headlines when he announced plans to demolish all but two buildings remaining from old downtown because they were no longer needed or well received by residents – an event that forever changed the face of business and shopping on Main Street! Since then, much has happened to help make Sterling one of the most vibrant communities in northwest Illinois: The city renovated its water treatment plant in 2002; replaced its aging streetlights with LED lights; added new sidewalks and artichokes onto Main Street; began developing 100 acres adjacent to town square into an urban farm called "The Square"; completed construction on three new high school campuses – one inside downtown and two satellite campuses – making it one of only eight cities statewide with four high schools inside city limits; initiated moves towards creating a "walkability" ordinance requiring all new development within city limits include bike lanes/walks/sidewalks etc.; established partnerships with various organizations including Northwestern Illinois University's School of Architecture and Planning (SAP), United Way/St Joseph's Hospitality Foundation (UWF), Kiwanis Club (KC)…"

Sterling, Illinois is a small town in Johnson County, Illinois. The population was 3,022 at the 2000 census. Sterling is located on the eastern edge of Johnson County and is bordered by the towns of Carbondale to the north, Mount Carmel to the east, and Clinton to the south. According to the 2010 census, Sterling has a total area of 33.5 square miles (89 km²). The first settlers in Sterling were three men who arrived in 1839 from Michigan: John Richards and James Haines from Dearborn Heights; Samuel Kirkpatrick from Highland Park; and Salmon Pye from Godfrey. In 1840, four more men came overland from Michigan: Levi Coffin from Detroit, John McNeely from Fort Recovery near Warsaw Township; Joseph Farnham from Mound City; and Solomon Doane of Huntington Township. All except Doane had been born in New England or Northern Ireland. The first land grant for what would become Sterling was made to William Nolan in 1848 by Abraham Lincoln as part of his Rural Housing Act program. This grant included 640 acres (250 hectares). In 1851, two more grants were made- one containing 515 acres (220 hectares) and another containing 335 acres (130 hectares). These grants formed what is now called Nolanville township. The first post office was established here on July 1st, 1854 with Wm. Fenton as mail carrier. From this point forward until 1865 when it was moved to Carbondale due to growing concerns about Indian raids into Johnson County., Sterling served as both a village center and an isolated rural community . In 1861 when Confederate General Robert Ealy invaded Johnson County after Mobile Bay fell to Union forces under Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War, many residents chose notto fight because they believed that their southern neighbor would side with such a despicable act against their people . However some brave souls decided that war was necessary for their country's cause even if it meant facing opposition within their own community . On November 8th 1861 , nine residents of Sterlingsigned a petition calling for secessionist sentiment within their town hall meeting which led ultimately to its incorporation into Carbondale as an unincorporated area under federal jurisdiction

Sterling is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 709 at the 2010 census. Sterling was first settled in 1867 by the Hochschild family and is the oldest community in Kane County. The name Sterling comes from a post office called "Sterling Heights" which opened on November 1, 1876. The post office closed on December 15, 1907. The first store in Sterling was a general store run by Wm. J. Hochschild and his father-in-law John Kappelman. On October 5, 1895, the first railroad station in Sterling was built by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad with tracks running northwest to southbound along Main Street and east to west along Indian Trail (now US 30). In 1912, when Illinois became a state, Sterling became part of Cook County and continued to be governed under its own laws until it merged into the city of Chicago on February 3, 1931. In 1916–1917, during World War I, Confederate veterans from nearby Moline fought for General George Armstrong Custer's army at Battle of Gettysburg near Sterling while also training new military recruits there.
