The first coffee shop in Sterling was opened by two friends, Harry and Mildred Goudreau. The store was located in a small shopping center on the corner of Clyffe Avenue and South Washington Street. The first cup of coffee was brewed at the Goudreau's home. They sold their first bag of coffee beans in 1922. In 1928, they moved to a new location on West State Street. In 1935, they opened their own café called "Harry and Mildred's". In 1941, they built a new building on North Lexington Avenue which served as their main headquarters until 1978 when they bought an adjoining building and reopened as " Harry & Mildred Coffee Company". In 1993, the company merged with American Coffee Works Incorporated.
Sterling is a small, unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2 at the 2010 census. Sterling is located on the southern border of Kane County and is east of Chicago. It is part of the Rockford, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was born out of a crossroads location along the Kankakee River. A post office called Sterling was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1873, Hemanus Crawford opened a gristmill here which became one of the largest flour mills in Illinois. In 1905, Sterling's first school opened its doors to students from nearby communities including Mattoon, Beech Grove and Harveyville.

In 1795, Johann Friedrich Blumenbach invented a brewing method which would make it possible to produce large quantities of high quality coffeebeans at low costs. By 1830, over seventy different types of coffees had been grown throughout Europe and North America. Coffee became an important part of European culture because it was believed that its bitter flavor helped improve mental productivity while its smooth texture added richness to all kinds of dishes. During World War II, Europeans turned their attention away from food production and towards two main sources: exports for munitions manufacturing and coke production for gasoline production.
