Steger is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,598 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Steger is located on the banks of the Kankakee River and has a diverse economy that includes agricultural production and processing, service businesses, and retail commerce. The town was founded in 1853 by German immigrants as a farmstead on what is now Steger Boulevard. In 1870, Steger became an incorporated village under the name of "Steger-on-the-Kankakee". On July 1, 1893, it merged with neighboring Randolph to form Steger Township. The township was disbanded in 2000. The mainstay of the local economy for many years has been agriculture: since 1930 there has been a corn ethanol plant located in SteGER; today there are also several poultry farms and other animal husbandry businesses operating within its borders. Steger is a small town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Steger was Isaac Weitzel and his family in 1814. They were followed by Jacob Kapp and his family in 1825. The first post office was established in Steger on October 7, 1830. Steger became a village on April 14, 1890. On December 12 of that year, it became an incorporated town with a population of 1,821 people. The original downtown core of SteGER was built between 1902 and 1906 as a shopping and nightlife district known as "the Village." In 1912, the city limits were expanded to include parts of Downers Grove (then just north of SteGER) and greater Elmhurst (southwest of SteGER).
