The National Guard of Steger, Illinois was organized on December 6, 1903. At the time, the Steger National Guard consisted of only a few men and women who were volunteers from various villages in the area. The unit was not officially constituted until February 14, 1904 when it was ordered to march to Springfield for orders. On that date, the Steger National Guard first saw action in a civil disturbance which occurred near town center. A group of citizens had gathered to demand that the local sheriff lock up two men for vagrancy. When the guards arrived on scene, they arrested both men and took them into custody. From its inception through World War I and World War II, the Steger National Guard has played an important role in our community. In 1917-1918, it participated in WWI as part of Illinois Defense Force; during WWII it served as part of Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force (AAF 9th AF) stationed at Midway Island and Nielson Field Airport north of Chicago. After WWII ended hostilities in Europe and North America came home with new responsibilities – such as providing security for nuclear plants – the SteGER NG also became involved in peacetime duties by providing manpower for several state organizations including Community Service Boards (CSBs), Emergency Management Agency (EMA), State Highway Patrol (SHP), Gaming Control Board (GCB) and more recently Corrections Corporation Of America (CCA). A sawmill operated near SteGER from 1894 to 1912. The mill burned down on July 4, 1912.

Steger is a small town in northwestern Illinois, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Homer Township government. Steger is located on the banks of the Whitewater River and has a post office that opened in 1868. The community was named for Augustus W. Steger, an early settler who platted the area and donated land to the township in 1865. The original village was built on a bend in the Whitewater River, about east of its present location. A newvillage was established downstream from Steger in 1890, when steamer "Alma" arrived at its wharf to load passengers for Streator County (now Decatur). In 1907, SteGER Electric Light Company became one of seventeen companies organized to provide electric service through Springfield's tri-state area under Chapter 368 of the State Laws of 1907. One year later, it merged with three other electric companies to become Northwestern Illinois Edison Company (NIE), chartered under Act No 2266 approved by the General Assembly on October 10th, 1907." NIE continued providing electricity until 1935 when it merged with Chicago Edison Company to form Consolidated Edison Corporation (CE). From 1942 until 1945 SteGER served as Headquarters for World War II military forces stationed at Camp Devens near Joliet; when deactivation ended hostilities there they returned home In 1946 they leased their current premises from Northwestern Illinois Telephone Company which continue serving them until 1993 upon Nevele's acquisition by Ameritech Incorporated and subsequent divestiture by Eastman Kodak Co., ltd.. On July 15th 1999 all operations were transferred from their old building into an all new facility adjacent to Mecosta High School which opened August 15th 2000 earning them distinction as one of 'the first high schools in America' . They remain operational today as STEGER Elementary School within Mecosta Township Government Apostles Chapel Cemetery: Apostles Chapel Cemetery is located just northwest of town on Hwy 71 north about 12 miles west of Springfield on I-95W exit 9A1/2 ARROWHEAD CEMETERY COOPERATIVE DNA STRUCTURE PROJECT - This cemetery contains remains dating back over two hundred years including some intermentdates that are quite difficult to date due to modifications made during Wheaton’s ownership & occupancy including additions such as a large military installation & resultant changes in ground level posture & water table
