A shopping center and two schools were built in SteGER during the 1960s and 1970s, respectively.The economic decline of the Midwest during the early 21st century led to a contraction of STEGER's manufacturing base and a decrease in employment opportunities within local businesses. However, STEGER has regained some momentum over recent years with development of new businesses including a brewery, gas station, pet store, pizza restaurant, boat launch dock for fishing and boating,[1] and an art gallery.[2]STEGER experienced significant growth following several waves of immigration beginning around World War II which brought newcomers from Germany (particularly from Silesia), Austria-Hungary ( particularly from Budapest ), Italy , Spain , Portugal , Greece , Czechoslovakia (Slovakia), Yugoslavia (Slovenia) and Romania . Many Germans who had married native-born Americans or other Europeans moved back into their birthplace after World War II while others took American jobs or went into business abroad; this process helped create what has been called "the best concentration of Germans anywhere".[3]The community's prosperity declined following successive rounds of economic recession starting in 2007; however it began to rebound following President Barack Obama's stimulus program that created many new jobs throughout Illinois .As early as 1885–1886 five farmers had organized themselves as a meeting place for people intent on settling down on their land west of Chicago ; these first settlers made good use of local resources such as timber they gathered along the way[4][5][6][7]In 1902 two steamboats connected STEGER with Metropolis In 1903 STEGER became an incorporated municipality A shopping mall was built in SteGER during the 1960s Two schools were built in SteKER during the 1970s

Steger is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,907 at the 2010 census. Steger was chartered in 1873 and incorporated as a village in 1903. The site of the present-day Steger was first known as "Naugatuck" and then "New Hartford". In 1857, John C. Frémont explored the area and named it after General George Armstrong Custer's regiment that had fought at Buena Vista Heights during the Mexican–American War. The first settler in Steger was Eli Whitney, who arrived there in 1853 with his family. Whitney built a gristmill on the Steger River in 1854 and became its first postmaster. He also founded what is now known as the Whitney Museum of American Art in SteGER Village (now part of Chicago) in 1865. In 1870, two brothers named Fenton bought out Eli Whitney's interest and started a store called the Fenton Store on Main Street which continued until 1889 when it moved to Elmwood Avenue. In 1902, steamer service began between Chicago and Streator on Lake Michigan; this led to the city annexing SteGER Village from it on December 12 of that year. In 1906, Mayor Abram Sennett proposed thatSteGER be destroyed by fire because of its lack of water storage capacity for heavy agricultural usage; however, community leaders agreed to rebuild using more efficient methods based upon their experience with frame homes at nearby Lombardowne Park near Chiropractic University which had been abandoned due to lack of water supply for agriculture four years earlier (the park remains an important local center). By 1907, over one hundred buildings had been erected including twenty-four churches and twelve school buildings which were used until they were replaced by new brick structures during World War II when steel mills sprang up around Illinois due to wartime production demands; however all but one church were razed during those years due to low budgets or changing trends within STEGER Village since postwar times have seen increased commercial development along downtown streets while preserving much cultural history preserved withinSTEVERVillage structure types include: Frame Homes/ clustered Craftsman Style architecture closeout Prairie SchoolStyle schools postcard style residences Second Generation Black Americans white flight farmers First Generation Irish Americans many other ethnic groups
