Steger, Illinois is the largest city in Kane County and the county seat of Steger. The population was 97,829 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Kankakee River in northern Illinois. In 1836, a group of farmers founded Steger as a post office with two stores and one sawmill. The first postmaster was David Hebard. The town grew quickly and by 1852 had 10 stores, four hotels, six restaurants, two churches, three schools, and a sawmill. The town prospered until 1871 when a devastating fire destroyed most of the buildings including the Sawmill and Post Office. Afterward Steger slowly lost its importance as an agricultural center to Chicago until it regained prominence after World War II as an industrial center for manufacturing products such as textiles and aircraft parts. Today Steger is known for its wide variety of cultural attractions including its art galleries, museums, performing arts venues and historical sites dating back to pioneer times.
The town of Steger was founded in 1854 by German immigrants. It became a part of the United States in 1885. The population of Steger peaked at over 10,000 in the 1920s, but has since declined.
