Steger is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area. Steger is located on the right bank of the White River, about 12 miles (19 km) east of Peoria and 21 miles (33 km) north-northwest of Chicago. The first settler in Steger was John Witherspoon in 1837. The town was platted in 1851 by General George Armstrong Custer's regiment as part of a strategic location for cavalry training during the American Civil War. The town greatly increased its population after railroads arrived and became an important shopping center for farmers in central Illinois. During World War II, Steger played a significant role as one of three major Army posts near Peoria – with Camp Logan to the south and Camp Donnellan to the north – that handled food supply and transportation for military activities across central Illinois during WWII. In 1946 Steger had a post office with ZIP code 61701; it closed effective July 1, 2009, due to budget cuts by then-Governor Rod Blagojevich which among other things eliminated many small towns from state assistance programs such as mail service or local government funding. In his inaugural address on January 20th, 2010, Mayor Rick Obermeier announced plans to reopen the Post Office building adjacent to City Hall where they were unable to open due to lack of funds several years prior; they will also be able to provide online ordering through their website beginning February 5th!
