Steger was founded in 1849 by German immigrants and has been a community since then. It is named after Wilhelm Steger, an early settler. The town is located on the banks of the Kankakee River and has a population of about 2,500 people as of 2010. The name "Steger" comes from the German word "Stegern" meaning "bridge". In 1849, Wilhelm Steger settled in what is now SteGER Village near present day Chicago. He farmed until his death in 1865. His wife Johanne (née Krüppel) also originated from Germany and immigrated to America in 1853 with their two children: Wilhelm (1854-1914) and Anna (1857-1936). She married John Haggerty on October 12th of that year and they started living inChicago. In 1860 they moved to Springfield where Anna became the first woman to graduate from Springfield High School–an event which still marks her memory today! They both died there three years later however due to pneumonia brought on by Typhoid Fever! After their deaths, their wives took over farm operations until 1916 when World War I interrupted those plans. A new barn was built soon afterwards and continues to be used today as community center/library/community hall with various other functions including weddings and funerals services throughout the year!
